Steam Link

Cannot even set up Steam Link, no video after splash screen
I got my Steam Link today. Plugged it into my router and TV, turned it on. The splash screen (picture of Steam Link surrounded by glowing blue stuff) appears for a few seconds, but then goes blank (TV stops receiving input).

Plugging a USB keyboard and mouse into the Steam Link and restarting didn't help.

I'm pretty sure this isn't supposed to happen. Am I doing something wrong, or is my unit defective?

Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. Quick test though, try different inputs on that tv and see if it is still happening. Also try another tv or monitor if it is happening on all inputs.

*also, is your sending pc on and configured through the steamlink already? If so, I've read multi monitor and high resolution (4k and higher) cause issues like this on launch.

**never mind, I reread the title. Sound like issues out of the box right?

Hey SixGunManiac,

Thanks a lot for the tip, it was a great idea and it helped. I plugged it into the HDMI on my monitor and now I actually see a menu. I'm going to have to figure out exactly why it wasn't working on my TV.

Good to know. Maybe try resetting your tv back to factory settings if it still doesn't work after you get it set up.

I've been having the same issue. Splash screen, then nothing. I have no settings on my TV that would help, and I've tried changing the resolution through Steam settings. if you figure something out, be sure to post it.

If you're sure your TV is on the correct input and the Link is what's bugging out try doing a factory reset.

Get a pendrive and create a file called `factory_reset.txt` with a `1` or some data in it. Put that in a folder named `steamlink` on the root of your pendrive. So it should look like this /steamlink/factory_reset.txt. Plug that pendrive into your steam link and take the power plug in then out to reset it to factory defaults. If that doesn't fix it you can also try manually applying the latest update. See this reddit post.

I don't know how much this'll help, but in my case it turned out to be the HDMI cable. If you have a PC monitor with a HDMI input and can afford to get another HDMI cable, I'd try all four combinations (PC/TV, old/new cable) and see if any of those combinations work. I wish I had better advice; if I think of any, I'll post it here.

No need. Those are the best first steps you can do from this point.

You might have HDMI control set to on with your TV. This setting allows your TV to control other HDMI devices IE when you turn on your TV it automatically turns on your receiver. This is nice to have but if it is set to on then it might be interfering with the steam link.

I have mine set to on with my TV but my steam link goes through my receiver and then to the TV.

Just something you might check.

EDIT: I have a Sony receiver and a Samsung TV. The thing with Samsung TV's is if they don't receive any HDMI input signal they go into standby. So when the Steam Link is switching resolutions with the splash screen it could be seeing that as a loss of signal and then just not picking it back up. One thing you can also try when it does this is switch the TV off that HDMI input then back.
