Steam Link

Steam Link

How I fixed Mouse/all Lag / Interesting finds / Rambling
I picked up my steam link yesterday and ended up going to best buy twice for different things.

I started out trying to play over wifi. Speedtest.net - download 256 mbps upload 30 mbps

Layout: Computer and Router are in the same room which is about 20 feet through a wall to the front room where my steam link is connected.

FALLOUT 4

Using Wired xbox360 on Beautiful 1080p - I had small lag spikes every 2-3m with bits of audio lag as well. The graphics were diminished as well and not as crisp as my pc (1080p i7 4770k gtx 780oc 32gigs ram)

Mouse/Keyboard - Wireless HPk4000 keyboard - really small made for tablets mostly runs off bluetooth. Mouse - Logitech G700 wireless gaming mouse.

Findings: I could use the keyboard fine and move around in the starting area with 0 lag but once I started using the mouse to look around.... OMG my fps would drop to 3-4 I would lag for 5-10 sec at a time. I wanted to record a video but the steamlink overlay did not record on my elgato capture card which is connected to my pc which makes sense. Turning the mouse off resulted in 1080p 60fps consist with 0 lag or screen tearing. All testing was done in starting fallout 4 zone.

My Fix

The first thing i did was replace the mouse / keyboard with the Logitech mx 520 combo
I still had some issues but nothing like the Logitech g700 gaming mouse. I would like to know if others are having issues with this gaming mouse as well. I still had low quality color, detail, crispness, and minimal screen tearing. Lag spikes every so often due to the inconsistency of wifi in general. its playable but if your a hard core gaming who wants 0 lag and the same color quality as your computer monitor I suggest buying powerline adapters.

I went to best buy twice - once to buy the test mouse and keyboard and again for the Netgear powerline adapter 1200 series.

Powerline adapters - Really Really Really good buy.....let me say it again.. Really Really Really good buy. I had 0 lag. on beautiful 1080p with mouse and keyboard. I know its an extra 70 dollars but it was well worth it. I played 3 hours of Fallout 4 with mouse and keyboard with 0 interruptions. The color quality, crispness, and detail of the game improved so much from the wireless. If you do not want to run a 25 foot cord from the back of your router to the front room then this is the fix.

I dont know a lot about how powerline adapters work but basically it turns the cooper wiring in your house into a cat5 cable. You plug 1 box into the plug by your router and run the ethernet cable from your router to the box. You go to the outlet by your steam link and do the same thing. no software, no setup, no problems.

I've got my Steam Link set up like so:

MS Wedge Keyboard -------------------------- (BT) --\
MS Wedge Mouse --------------------------- -- (BT) -- SteamLink--Hub--PLC-AV600--Switch--PC
Logitech Wingman Cordless Gamepad---(RF)-/

PC is an i7 920 (OC to 3.6Ghz) with an AMD HD6970

The Ping time between the PC and the steam link varies between 3ms and 10ms depending on other traffic on the PowerLine network.

I find that most games work okay. BitBlasterXL, RaceTheSun, AnotherWorld are all identical to playing direct on the PC! Lush! If I use the Logitech Wingman, (despite the strange button mappings), the link works flawlessly, and most games work just fine. Lag with the keyboard is just fine, despite the fact that the Steam Link keeps dropping the Keyboard from BT when it goes into sleep mode, and I have to power-cycle the link to get it back.

However, as soon as I try and use the Wedge Mouse (or my other MS Curvy wedge mouse), Frame rate is SHOCKING. It's just JERK..JERK..JERK.. I *never* feel motion sick in games, but Trying to play FarCry3 with the SteamLink and a BlueTooth mouse was vomit inducing. It works oookayyy with Keyboard-only, or Wingman-only, but as soon as you touch the mouse.. Blergh.

I'm going to buy a USB extension cable and try and use a USB mouse tonight... IMHO, I've had nothing but problems with the Bluetooth connection on the Steam Link. Having it return from standby with all three "controllers" (KB+MS+GP) connected is a rarity.

A simple change of the TV Settings "Game Mode" option to "On" resolved my Mouse Lag issues.
