Steam Link Won't Connect Wirelessly
Currently awaiting an ethernet cord. In the meantime I have to use WiFi; anyways, my Steam Link is very close to my router (3/4 bars in signal strength) and when I go to connect to my router and enter in the password (which I made sure is correct) the machine says connecting, then it sets the status on the network screen to connecting then it just stops, it goes back to as if I never connected; no error message, nothing.

I've tried everything on the Steam Link Connection Problems page and made sure it isn't any setting on my router. I've done every step on there and it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

UPDATE!!

Fix found!

Having the same issue. Please add me if you figure it out and I will add you if I figure it out

Your Steam Link didn't come with an ethernet cable in the box?

What router are you using, what are the security settings on the router, and are you using the same SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz bands (if applicable)?

It did but my router is just far enough where it won't reach, but still pretty close. I'm using a Linksys E2500 with WPA2; and yea using the same SSID for 2.4 and 5ghz.

Is this your initial setup? Suggest you get the Link connected to the internet by any means possible so it can do the initial SW update.

If you have already done that or can't, you might try to use a different SSID for your 5GHz band and connect to that with the Link. Forcing it to 5GHz instead of letting it try to determine what band to use may work better.

However that's a wireless N router so YMMV even if you get the connection. Once you get your long ethernet cable it will probably be fine though.

I also have this problem.

Router: Asus RT-AC3200

Steam Link has full connection bars. I also temporarily plugged it in to Ethernet to have it update. Going to System Update results in Steam Link reporting it is up to date.

Trying to connect over Wi-Fi results in the network status briefly changing to Connecting, then disappearing. I tried typing in the password, used WPS pin and WPS push button. Same result with every attempt.

I discovered a temporary work around. (BTW, how do you do the update, I got my link connected now) so this workaround really isn't recommended but since I live in a rural area it works for me for the time being. If you disable your WiFi security it should work. I had WPA2 on and disabled it and the link connected on the 2nd try. Haven't tested other security settings, just disabling it.

To check for SW updates, on the main screen (where Start Playing, Settings and Support are), select Settings, then System, then Check for updates

ok, so I have the same problem, wired is ok, but I cant connect to my wifi - 2,4ghz, 5ghz, dosnt matter, I tried on new Apple AirPort, and then on simple tplink router with different settings. I see 2 solutions:

1. Many Steam links are broken
2. There is some huge problem with Steam Link firmware, and it doesn't work with lots of popular routers.

Can steam support answer? I would like to know, if I have to wait for update or maybe I should return it?

Ok - next step. I found old dlink router, and it connect without problem, so Steam Link IS NOT broken, thats good news. Bad news, that they launched product without support for many routers - in my case its tplink and apple.

The questions is, are they working to fix that and how long we have to wait? I see that its popular these days, to launch a product with lots of issues - I call this Beta4ever

I have an RT-AC3200 as well. I've tried all three SSIDs, 2.4Ghz (g/n), 5Ghz (n) and 5Ghz(ac)... all do exactly as described... connecting and then nothing. I refuse to turn off encryption as a possible work-around. Every other device in my household works fine. This is NOT a problem with the router, it's a problem with steam link, occums razor... one device doesn't work, blame the device that doesn't work, not the router.

I do this for a living (seriously, I'm developping some firmware for a wireless router at work). This wouldn't fly with my clients, in fact, something like this happens more than once and we're off the approved vendor list. Our clients (airlines) do not have the patience for things that don't just work and we're a much smaller company that Steam. Granted, a wireless access point from us will cost you thousands, maybe even tens of thousands, so different QA standards, but seriously, this left a bad taste in my mouth and I have little patience these days. I game for fun and this turned into work, think of me like the airlines... you get only one chance, it's all I've got patience for.

I managed to get it working. Do a factory reset, plug it into wired, let it update and reboot. Try again. I had initially had it connected via wired and did an update before trying wifi the first time. Not sure why or how, but the network settings must have gotten messed up. For some reason, resetting it fixed it, at least for the moment. (also, note, on this attempt I did not remove the wired connection before trying wifi). Now steam, about the bill for my time?

Have you tried updating the FW of your routers? I suspect any early AC routers have had significant FW updates since release. Maybe nothing wrong with router but you should check for updates.

Also curious if any of your other devices connected to your AC routers are also AC MIMO 2x2 devices and you are sure they are working in that mode. If the Link is the first such device on your network then you have not really tested your router in that mode and may not be able to conclude the router is indeed good in that mode.

Hope this helps.
