My wireless adapter isn't an official Microsoft one.

Nah. Its just buggy right now they are ver busy sorting out controller compatiblityright now. Once that is done it will work the way its supposed too.
You need to get the model of that and manufacturer and send that information too:
SteamHardwareFeedback@valvesoftware.com
They are busy adding third party support for alot of contrller items right now .
I've gotten word back from them by sending info to that email
Put in your subject third party support needed for x360 wireless receivers.
And showing that its an afterthought to their own controller... Otherwise this would've been done well before release instead of afterwards. Other controllers have been on the market for YEARS, where their own has only recently even finished being designed.
They built with their own in mind, and are only adding others because.. well.. many people just aren't going to want theirs, or will want to use their own obviously!
Should not have been that hard to have figured out, especially not for a company that prides itself with the PC market being top of its list. Just browse about the forums and people are always on about getting this controller or that controller to work.
All of this should've been finalized prior to release and at the very worst made for a day 0 patch.
I'm not saying its all bad. They are adding it afterall.
But its a glaring issue that they should've seen coming before they even designed the box itself, and known since concept.
Fine example is all the people that shunned the horrid Nvidia controller in favor of XBox and PS controllers for the NVidia shield. And thats been on the market for awhile as a streamer. So to not expect and prepare for it on Link was an obvious oversight.
And the no on/off button... thats just stupid at best for ANYTHING... even if they intended it to work with the controllers. Theres no reason on this world that can excuse the lack of that button/switch...
Thats like taking a car that uses an Key FOB to operate and having no way to turn it on without the Key FOB battery working or some sort of backup key...
I am using an xbox 360 wireless controller and it does NOT wake the Steam Link. This is using build 372.
How? How do you wake the Steam Link from your computer?
^^^^ This! (Easiest solution, no?)
If you turn the Steam Link off you can straight away power on the device again by hitting the middle x-box button on the controller, but, if you leave it a good half hour or so you can't turn the Steam Link on by doing the same again, you have to unplug the dongle and plug it back in to enable the controller to sync and turn the Steam Link back on again.
Steam link's build 372
I think theres been a decent unannounced update or something, cause this started working for me yesterday (at least so far)
How long was your Steam Link asleep before you tried this? Because if I power down my Steam Link for say 15 minutes, I can wake the device with my xBox 360 Wireless controller. However, if it is sleeping all day and I try, it will not wake.
