RT-AC68U router
Host : I7-4790k GTX980 24 GB Ram
Client : Steam Link and I5-3200M 8 gigs of ram no GPU
-Wired or Wireless-
Both. Wireless-AC works flawlessly with the steam link. The client laptop is sometimes plugged into gigabit ethernet but this does not make much of a noticeable difference.
-TV
My TV sucks, we'll just leave it at that. Actually I'll add a bit more here. My TV sucks because it's a 720p plasma from 2009. With that said, my 720p plasma from 2009 most likely has a better response rate than any "LCD Smart TV" sold today.
-Distance of computer to steamlink
Wire length from host PC - 30 feet to the router.
Wifi Length - 5 to 50 feet (through multiple walls) depending on where it's being used.
-Host computer/steamlink settings
Hardware encoding
Beautiful Client side options
QoS Enabled
Jumbo Frames (9k) enabled on host PC
Irrespective to whether i'm using wired or wireless the connection is flawless. Both to my steam link as well as my low end laptop. I did have to tweak my home network a bit to get it working this smoothly.
For example : I leave my 5Ghz channel exclusively for my streaming devices. There isn't much of a point for our iPad to be on the 5Ghz band. Streaming only uses about 30mbit of bandwidth but if you have multiple devices on the same channel the router can only service so many of them in a reasonable amount of time. Clever positioning of the wifi router itself also helped a lot.
If you have the opportunity to use a wired-only connection between both the host and steam link then connecting both computers to an unbuffered switch (not a router) would actually be the fastest solution. You would then connect the switch to the router using a separate ethernet line.
Jumbo frames on the host/client PC's can make a huge difference but I'm unsure of what settings the steam link itself uses. It's generally accepted that if you have a frame size mismatch it will be slower.
My setup
PC: i5 4490, Radeon 7870.
Network: both the PC and the Link are wired through an ASUS RT-56N (gigabit) router. I tried disconnecting the Link from the wired network and used 5 Ghz N wireless, and while there was a performance hit, most games I tried were still very playable. Though the Link and the wireless router are about 20 feet apart on the same floor.
Settings: The Link is set to 1080p, balanced quality. PC is also set to balanced quality; I don't have either of the "Advanced Host Settings" options turned on.
Fritz!Box 7390
Wireless :
Did not even try, there are huge interferences by other WiFis where I live. I mostly play games where even minimal input lag destroys everything..
Wired : I'm using PowerLine adapters, it works like a charm. But I tried some quite old ones first, I had terrible performance issues with them. So you should watch out to get some good ones. I don't know the model of the ones I'm using right now. If I remember I'll have a look tomorrow.
TV :
Samsung, quite a couple of years old. Look for Game Mode in the menus, otherwise there will be terrible input lag.
PC:
i7 2600, Geforce GTX580, 16 GB RAM, Windows 10
Settings:
Balanced/Automatic/1080p. I tried changing some settings but the performance was not satisfying, so I set it back.
Distance :
It are just about 3m, but it's running through my fuse box as it are 2 different rooms. So 50cm lan to router +1m to power outlet + 5m to fuse box + 8m to power outlet +1m lan = about 15m (if the power line is like I imagine)
I also tried with a 20m network cable (no Powerline) and it worked without any issues as well.
Performance:
Really great at 60fps, I played Bit.Trip Runner 2 and I did not feel any delay. There were like 2-3 micro stutters, but they did not cause me to die. And the big picture browser looks a bit ugly while scrolling, but watching videos on youtube and netflix works great.
Issues:
The only issues I am currently experiencing are Steam Controller related, could not get it to work in Watch Dogs. As others are reporting issues with Steam Controller + Steam Link as well, I am waiting for an update.
Do you have the "Game Mode" enabled on your TV? If not, do it!
