Steam Link
Advice for your router configuration (Especially the FRITZ!Box 7490)
Hi,

Here is what I found out about what my network is capable of:
(didn't know and didn't need to prior to the Steam Link...)

1. Check if the LAN port that you use for your PC really operates in gigabit mode.
(By default only port one operates in gigabit mode for the FRITZ!Box 7490. If you happen to make the same mistake as I did and reset your router to defaults, you may find your PC on a 100 mbit connection and don't notice it...)

2. Configure seperate SSID's for your 2,4 GHz and for your 5,0 GHz wireless LANs.
(By default the FRITZ!Box 7490 uses the same SSID for both of the wireless networks it provides. By assigning a specific name to the 5,0 GHz wireless LAN, you can force your Steam Link to only connect to the 5,0 GHz wireless LAN! The difference between the two is the difference between "unusable" (2.4 GHz) and "perfect" (5,0 GHz) for the Steam Link - I am not exaggerating!

Those two configuration settings made "beautiful" run absolutely smoothly for me using the Steam Link (Firmware 484) connected over 5,0 GHz wifi within a distance of 5 Meters to my router while the PC is connected via gigabit LAN (cable obviously, Intel 82578DC LAN adapter.)

Let me know if this was useful for some of you guys. ;)

Hello Krullemuck - did you ever resolve this? I just signed up with a new ISP & they sent me one.. Noticed only 1 LAN port results in a GB connection while other devices connected to other LAN on the Fritz - despite Gig LAN Cards only show 100..
Hiho, you have to explicity configure the LAN ports to run in performance mode. By default only one LAN port runs in performance mode while the other 3 are running in eco mode in order to preserve power. Go to fritz.box and enable the extended view.

Awesome - worked for jme.. thanks
Hi can anyone help me open the required ports on my Fritz box router, I've been trying for ages and I'm sure that it's something simple

you do not need to forward any ports, unless you are hosting games and others connect to your internet ip

reset the modem/router to defaults and try again

only other thing you should need to disable is the routers wifi isolation (blocks communication between lan and wifi devices)

to use the link, just make sure the host is set to private network not public (blocks lan communication)
