Steam Link

Big (Green) Picture
So I've been using Steam Link for a while now, and just in the last couple of builds I have started to have a strange issue.

When I connect to my PC from the Steam Link and it launches Steam in Big Picture mode (per normal); instead of the seeing the normal Steam Big Picture splash screen, I see the cursor shows up, the screen goes black for a bit, and then the screen displays a solid green color with an even brighter green color in the middle. Picture here[goo.gl]. The cursor sometimes stays, and sometimes goes away. Sound/Audio works.

What is even more intriguing, is that it only appears to be a problem in the Big Picture UI's streaming. If I blindly navigate to a game to start playing, the game displays just fine, but as soon as I exit from the game and go back to the Big Picture UI. The Green re-appears...Most of the time... every now and then, exiting a game fixes the UI, but only temporarily.

Yes, I've checked the HDMI cable.
Yes, I've tried a different TV.
Yes, I'm using a wired network.
My video card is an EVGA GeForce 960 GTX
OS is Windows 7

When I check the display on the PC running Big Picture it looks fine on the monitor.

I'm very confused on where else to go. Anyone else seen this, or found a work around?

Go to the host PC, open BPM->Settings->Streaming->Advanced Host Settings and try the different encoders (software, Intel, Nvidia) and see if you get the problem with all or just some of them.

So the only one that works is the software encoder... as soon as the Nvidia encoder is enabled the green comes back.

Unfortunately using software rendering is pretty choppy in-game in my set up, and so the hardware rendering is still need :-(

I can't really try the Intel renderer as I have no Intel video set up.

I tried to paste a picture in my opening thread, but it keeps getting removed.. https:// goo.gl /photos/BxZ8MqNqU7myp92r8

I also just noticed that if I reboot the PC, and then connect to it via the Link it works fine... but as soon as a play a game, and then exit to return to BPM, the problem comes back and any future connects with the Link have problems again.

So the problem is with the Nvidia encoder
Try:
-Join the Steam Client beta
-Reinstall NVidia drivers
-if you still get this issue, upload your streaming.log to pastebin and link it.

So the Beta build seemed to help... BPM showed fine but any games displayed a single window full screen would show the green screen again. Reinstalling the drivers so far appears to have worked. I'm not 100% certain that it will stay fixed, but so far so good. Thanks for Tucu, for the recommendations. Hopefully it all stays happy.

So in case anyone else comes across this issue in the future... the driver reinstall was what did the trick. No problems since.

Aha! Looks like that was the culprit

Thanks a lot!!!

Turning off NVFBC in the streaming options worked for me.

FIX for NVIDIA:

1. go to Steam
2. Settings
3. Remote Play
4. Disable "Use NVFBC capture on NVIDIA GPU"

if it works - thank me with a game gift :steamhappy:

This is how I fixed my issue.

I had the green screen issue, tried lots of things (including those fix such as updating resolution in Regedit), but none of them work for me.

I want to enabled "Use NVFBC capture on NVIDIA GPU" as I find it is provide better stream performance.

I also want to use Big Screen Mode

I fixed my issue by switching to different input source from the monitor. For example, if my PC connect to USB-C of this monitor, then I change to DP/HDMI source after PC boot into Windows and Steam starts. After doing this, stream works fine, even with NVFBC and Big Screen mode enabled.

This may help to the people who is not setup PC as isolated headless Steam server, like myself. So I can use PC for work and play game, only change to remote play mode when I need to.
