Black screen/ Crash on change resolution from 1920 to 4K
Hi everyone. I tried checking some of the topics that I found here and there but I'm lost here.

So what I'm trying to do is using the steamlink to stream 4K. My graphic card is a 1070 and the native resolution is 1920 (as my monitor is not a 4K monitor). So, I went to Nvidia control panel -> manage 3d settings -> DRS Factors -> added 4.00X (native resolution)
Then in Nvidia control panel -> Display -> Change resolution -> Selected 4K

I can also see the 4K resolution in the windows display:

In my PC I can go to steam->settings->remote play -> client advance options -> and the resolution there will be 4K too:

For the host advance options I have unchecked Change desktop resolution... and Dinamically adjust capture resolution ...... I tried with both checked but same problem

I can see the same when I'm running the host (PC) in big picture

So here is were my problems come. I tried this running first in the Samsumg TV steam app. The problem is that as soon as I start to stream, the resolution is set back to 1920. If I change the resolution from the games, nothing happens, but if I change the resolution in the steamlink app (which again, reverted to 1920) then there is like a weird image and then black screen. The game seems to be running in the host is that there is no image in the TV.

First I though that it could be possible that the problem was the TV app so I got the raspberry pi 3b and installed the streamlink there. As soon as I change the resolution, same problem. Here I have the Pi connected to a pc monitor that doesn't support 4K neither but thinking that it could be possible that the problem was the monitor I connected the Pi also to the TV. Same result:

As you can see the resolution in the steam monitor is 4K but everything is black and I have to reboot the PIi.

I though that it could be the game at first but then I realised that just changing the resolution will break the steamlink app.

I also though that it could be the Pc but for instance, here is a screenshot of the steamlink app running in my mobile where the steam monitor indicates 4K and seems to be working

So basically: Any suggestions about why this could be happening and how I could try to fix it?

Edit: In Steam->Settings->Display the display is set to 1920 and I can not see the 4K resolution (which I guess is why as soon as I start to stream it reverts to that resolution)

First off, the Pi3 is only HDMI 1.3, which can't output 4K in the first place, and I don't believe it's video hardware is powerful enough to decode it in realtime either. Efforts on the Pi were doomed from the start.

The Samsung TV app should support it though. When you say that the resolution is being set to 1920x1080, where are you seeing this?

Thanks for the response.

I can see that in steam->options-> display->resolution. This is I think the host resolution as I can see there my graphics card and monitor.

What kind of hardware could run steamlink on 4k?

That option is just Big Picture Mode's internal resolution, which caps out at 1080p and has no bearing on game or display resolution.

Capture resolution in the on screen statistics will show you the host or your game's current display resolution, which still isn't necessarily the same as the Steam Link's final output resolution. I'm actually not sure of a way to confirm it for 100% certain, but checking the display information on your TV should be able to show you what resolution it's currently receiving. Generally speaking though Steam Link's final output will be the closest 16:9 resolution to what's being captured that's at or below the maximum resolution setting in the client streaming options.

Above all else though, you need to pick 4K in game. Steam has no control over what resolution your games run at.

As for what hardware Steam Link will run at 4K on, Samsung TVs, any 4K capable AndroidTV or AppleTV device, and possibly a Raspberry Pi 4. Also, not technically Steam Link, but you can Remote Play at 4K using a laptop or HTPC with the Steam desktop client installed.

Thanks. The Samsung app seems to crash also as soon as i change the resolution. I will try to make some pictures or video to show the process to be sure that I'm not doing something dummy :)

So i finally got it working. It seems that any change in the resolution in the TV will make the app crash. So after a lot of trial an error i was able to find why was the resolution change. As I was trying to use glosc to make the xbox controller to work with the game, as soon as the game was executed, glosc was jumping in front of the screen changing the resolution and making the app to crash. So now with steam at 4K -> desktop 4k-> game 4K when the game starts before glosc then everything seems to work. thanks a lot for the help

Hey, I seem to having a similar problem when I try and launch Resident Evil 6 in 4k. The game opened when I first installed it this evening but when I changed the video settings to 4k and clicked apply the screen went black and PC temporarily stopped recognising my 4k monitor. I then pressed ctrl alt delete and turned the screen on and off which then allowed my PC and monitor to recognise each other again but couldn't then go back into the game window... or at least couldn't click on anything but it was still open so closed that off and tried to open the game again and same thing happened again. The screen goes black and says no signal. Don't know if I can even change the resolution back to 1080 now to even launch the game properly.

I looked for the steam settings you were talking about as it makes sense that Steam is getting in the way of the game running properly even though my monitor and pc should be able to run the game in 4k but then I have run other games fine so far in 4k through steam so a bit puzzling.

But going back to the steam settings... I couldn't find the ones you mentioned where you change the default to 4k. I don't see an options menu in steam. Where is it?

Thanks in advance.
