Crossover cable
Is it possible to connect the Steam Link directly to the PC via a crossover LAN cable?
Without a router in between.

Should be, but crossover isn't needed any more these days. Unless you have a very old network card. :)

You can connect the steam link to your PC with a standard ethernet cable, crossovers are not really used in modern home networking anymore. Unless like blehz said you have a VERY old network card, like from the 90's , in which case you should be buying a new network card.

You will still need internet piped to the steam link though so unless your using 'Shared Internet" you might be better off just buying a cheap router if you dont have one lying around.

1. link and pc will not have internet access on the link and pc (* unless the pc has a 2nd lan or wifi adapter)
2. you can but need to assign similar ip addersses for them to see each other

most lan ports are mdi/mdix (auto corssover detecting)
just pick up a cheapo gigabit lan switch and plug both into it if you need another lan connection for the pc and link
