Steam Link

Steam Link

Best way to improve quality and reduce input lag?
I just got my steam link today and so far I like it. Runs well considering its running on wifi. The only issue I have is the input lag. Im running this thing with a intel 3.4 quad with a 970 and 12 gb of ram, as for the TV its a standard 40+ inch Samsung HDTV just below my room. So far I can live with the quality but the half of second input lag is really bringing this down. Are there any ways to fix or at least improve this?

• Install the latest Nvidia drivers and disable the Shadowplay record last 20min feature

• Set your in-game settings so you get a solid 60FPS

• Disable in-game V-sync and Enable Adaptive V-sync in the NV Control Panel; ideally you don't want to be dipping below or going above 60 while streaming

• In the Nvidia control panel set "Maximum pre-rendered" frames to 1

• Run the game at 1080p or 720p (the upscaler on the link is a bit blurry if you run at 900p)

• Opt into the steam beta client and enable NVFBC in in-home streaming settings

• Set your TV to game mode or since you have a Samsung rename the input to "PC"

• Try disabling "Prioritize network traffic" in streaming settings

• Make sure the link is connected to the 5GHz radio. 2.4GHz doesn't have as much bandwidth and is usually crowded

• Connect your PC directly to the router with a ethernet cable that way only the steam link is wireless. In the best case scenario this can cut latency by half

• Try setting streaming quality to Beautiful (I've found on my 970 this actually results in a few ms less latency during complex scenes)

• Turn your router on its side or if you have external antennas rotate them a bit and see if it helps

• Lower the bandwidth setting on the link. Try 25, then 20, 15, etc.

^ That's all i can think of. If that doesn't work your only other solution is to upgrade (or optimize) your network.

I first tried IHS over WLAN and found input lag, changed to dLAN and it works like a charm now.

Setting the TV wont help if that's not the cause.

What kind of reply is that? Who says it is not the cause?

It is a possible fix to reduce input lag as is described, and might help others looking to solve input lag problems.

Exactly, a possible fix. The way you posted you implied its the fix. I agree though that not mentioning it at all was stupid.

I did almost all of those except for the shadowplay thing since I dont have it and so far the results are pretty good, input lag was pretty much cut in half or maybe even more. Might be enough for some games but fps like KF2 or half life still need further tweaking. Hopefully ill get a ethernet cable hooked up to the link soon and that might fix the problem further. Thanks for the help.

Set your TV correctly. :)

I browsed through the settings and I cant exactly find the input settings. Maybe it has a different name or im just looking in the wrong place.

And how different is it from your reply? There's no need to reply like that and then even call it stupid in another reply. Go throw insults somewhere else.

What TV do you have? Brand/model? For me (LG) it is on the input selection screen where you can choose HDMI, AV, SCART, ... . At the bottom right corner there's a button to label it. It gives a lot of options (i.e.: PC, game, settop box, ...). So you'll have to find something like that.

Ah, got it and switched it. So far things seem to be going well, on the menu it seems pretty responsive but the games no longer detect my DS4 controller.

The network/TV settings would not break the DS4 controller. Have you tried Re-pairing the controller?

That was the first thing I did. The DS4 does connect and works fine in Big Picture mode, it just doesnt do anything in game. Not sure why this is the case since it worked fine with every game before I renamed the hdmi port.
