for win10 steam will add a streaming audio that you need to change it to
steam client mutes the host pc speakers and grabs the audio
check windows mixer
make sure 'steam client bootstrapper' volume is turned up all the way
I have checked that already in the steam link main menu too and it is enabled. I even tried disabling it and re-enabling it in hopes that it would fix it but it did not.
- Hardware Steam Link purchased in 2016 and working fine up until a week ago.
- Sound in main Link menu is OK, but the host's sound after initiating streaming is off and can't be turned on. No sound in the "Big Picture" menu, no sound in games.
- Checked the host computer's mixer: The speakers were set to Steam Streaming Speakers, the volume was set to max, yet no sound.
- The host's and the Link's sound settings were set to stream sound.
- The TV was not muted and sound was set more than high enough to normally hear something.
And now, here's the kicker: The problem started when I tried launching GTA V on the Steam Link after not playing for many years. The game loaded a new Rockstar Games launcher I had never seen before, and the sound was cut off starting from there.
Fixes I have tried:
- Turn off and on all devices (Host PC, Steam Link, TV) and all in various orders, sometimes only one device at a time, sometimes everything at once. No results.
- Fiddle with the mixer on my host PC (mute and unmute the Steam Streaming speakers, use the speaker's TEST function, switch to an incorrect speaker and then back to the Steam one). No results.
- Unpair and repair the Link and the host PC. No results.
As I'm writing this I realise that I have not tried to stream from another host PC yet. I'm guessing that the issue is with my host PC, but this test would confirm that. I'll try it tomorrow and repost here with the result.
Still, if anybody has any ideas, I'm keen on reading them!
link menu -> settings -> streaming -> advanced
make sure audio is ticked
I checked the advanced streaming settings and audio was ticked.
I decided to perform a factory reset of the Steam Link. That fixed the issue. Had to spend some time reapplying updates though, but hey, at least I got my audio back!
there is a key/combo to bring up the control
i think default is to hold esc after you begin streaming, then you can mouse to bring it up
Ah! Good to know. If I ever have this problem again I'll be sure to try that.
