SL with 4K TV and 4K headless ghost Hdmi adapter.

hi, I currently have a 4K TV a 1080p monitor a Galax GFORCE GTX 980 GFX card and a steam link, that works ok with 1080p streaming. My question is I have since come to the attention of what was known as Headless Ghost during it's startup. but now readly available to buy for a reasonable price which effectively a Hdmi plug that tricks your PC into thinking a 4k monitor is attached. so by using this would it be possible to play games in 4K on my TV using my steam link as I believe you can if you have a an actual 4K monitor attached. I'd rather pay £23 for the plug then £150 for a nvida Sheild..?

The Steam Link cannot decode 4K (3840x2160 or 4096x2160). And to be frank your 980 really cannot handle 4K either, games would be running at under 40FPS most of the time.

If you don't believe me you can try for yourself:

• Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
  
• Click Manage 3D Settings
  
• Click DSR - Factors, Check 4.00x and Click OK
  
• Click DSR - Smoothness and set it to 0%
  
• Click Apply

You should now be able to render games at 4K, and if the Steam Link supports it, it will capture+stream it at 4K too.

You are free to try it as Quad says, but the Steam Link really doesn't support 4K output, only 1080P60.

DSR outputs only 1080p so the link should have no problem (works with my AMD/VSR without problems).
And if running 4k steam will downsize to 1080p as far as I know

DSR 4X (4x1080p) will render at 4K and then will be down scaled before hitting the monitor.

But if you take a screenshot, use shadowplay or steam in-home streaming it will capture/send the full 4K resolution (not 1080).

Are you sure about the stream? If I take a screenshot using Tridef it captures full 1080p 3d sbs image but the link receives 1080p in total as hsbs. But it doesnt matter at all steam link wont work with 4k streams as already said

The steam link also does not particularly like Headless adapters as they are visual emulators.

thanks for the replys, i'll probably buy an nvida sheild, and use my steam link on another non 4k TV least with a sheild i'll have the pleasure of KODI and ITV player in my living room.
