Steam Link

Steam Link

No sound on my TV when using Steam Link
As in title. Steam Link is working properly, nice screen, no lag (Helps that the distance between my TV and Link is around 6 meters) but my TV doesn't produce any sound. Googled around a bit, but I only come accross old topics. Tried to use another Audio Device, doesn't work either. Tried various other solutions mentioned in older topics, still can't get it to work.

I don't have a surround system, just sound coming directly from my TV.

I'm not very experienced with technical shizzle, so if I'm overlooking something easy, any help would be appreciated.

Are you connecting your Steam Link with a HDMI to DVI cable or it's directly HDMI to HDMI?

If it's to DVI, then it's normal as only HDMI travel the sound so the DVI on your TV just take the video pins on the HDMI cable and forget about the sound.

If it's HDMI to HDMI, make sure there's no settings in your TV screen that might cause issue.

Is your computer produce sound tho?

What TV do you have?

I have a HDMI cable running from the Steam Link to the TV. I also have a WiiU connected to the TV, no issues there, everything works. I also tried to completely removing the WiiU, no difference. Used both HDMI slots in my TV for the Steam Link, no difference. When the Steam Link is connected to my TV and I have the visual screen working, there's only sound at my PC, not the TV.

My TV is a Philips Cineos. Old flatscreen TV, wouldn't surprise me if it's ~10 years old by now. Maybe that's important, I don't know.

(Website is in Dutch, but it's this exact one).

Even the oldest HDMI version had audio. HDMI 1.1 had DVD Audio but it's not a requirement if you have HDMI 1.0 anyway you should have sound.

Are you sure the sound isn't going in another output such an RCA Audio Output on your TV?

To clarify, do you have sound or not when in the Steam Link menus - navigating to system settings, network etc?

Or does sound work in the Steam Link menus, but does not work when you start streaming from the PC - big picture mode and gaming?

On your PC with Steam running click the volume control and open the mixer. Are any of the audio devices muted? Try to unmute them. You could try this with Steam running and/or streaming to the Link.

Your TV doesn't support 1080P - how did you resolve that? Did it work but you had to adjust the screen size in the Link menus, or did you force the Link to 720P with USB stick or something else?

I don't have sound at all. When I start the stream, the 'intro' doesn't even make any sound at all. So to clarify, I don't have any sound from the very first second in.

What do you mean with the 1080P screen setting? I attached the Link to my TV, switched to the correct channel and I had visuals. It just worked. Except the sound ofcourse.

I'll try you guys' suggestions tomorrow afternoon, it's too late now and I'm heading to bed. I really appreciate the support though!

Don't worry about the 720P setting, it sounds like you didn't do that. Some people had problems with it anyway. Sounds like you just plugged in the Link and it worked (picture wise), correct?

Try with a different TV or a monitor with built in speakers and see if you do get sound.

If that works you should follow Louna's idea that the TV might be trying to use another audio input (RCA etc) with the HDMI port you are connected to. Try another device (DVD player) on that HDMI port, and/or move the Link to the other HDMI port of your TV.

Good luck!

Hi - I initially had the same issue, and had to switch audio on the Steam Link to stereo instead of 5.1 (to which it was initially defaulted). If you power on the Steam Link, go to Settings > Audio and then change Speaker Configuration to Stereo this may work!

Works fine with 5.1 here.

I'm sure it works fine on some TVs, just suggesting it as an option for the OP since it doesn't work on mine.

GX mode is actually causing a lot of issues. So good thing to disable it. ASUS did a poor job on it and still haven't really fixed it.

I recently installed my old Asus Xonar DGX and it gave me no sound. I tried a lot of different solutions but the ONE thing that worked was installing these unified drivers. Tried all the other things mentioned in this thread. I'm hoping this saves peeps some time as it took me a while to figure this out.
