Amd Rx 480
I know it's a bit premature but, has anyone got and tested the new amd 480 card with the steam link? How does it perform?

I think it depends if you are using steamos or not. Steamos beta has been updated with the latest RX480 drivers somewhere last week, and afaik, it uses the encoding capabilities of ATI cards.

I am looking forward to know more about this

The video card doesn't really matter that much. Other than being able to select a different encoding mechanism but that would be in teh drivers on AMD's side plus support on the link itself.

Pretty sure the card does matter. You'd expect far better performance from a 480 than you would from say, a 270. But... Does ot handle streaming as well as its closest Nvidia competitor, the 970?

From all that I've read and experienced, AMD cards are hit and miss when it comes to streaming through the link.

I want to buy one of these cards (480) but first want to know how well it handles streaming as that will influence what I ultimately purchase.

Please keep this thread alive =D I'm hoping it's damn near perfect otherwise I need to wait for the 1060 =(

Well, I've just bought one. I've been holding off getting a gpu for 6 months now and I couldn't wait any longer. If it's ♥♥♥♥ I'll send it back.

Gets delivered tomorrow so once I've had chance to test it I'll report back.

Liz do you have Linux installed? Would be really nice to see how it performs there as well.

I've got an Ubuntu pc I built and use as a media server. I'm not sure the psu in it is up to the job but I'll open the case over the weekend and take a look.

I tested the Link with my new 480 crossfire... I'm sorry to say that it resulted in catastrophe. NOT working at all. Witcher 3 unplayable, Dishonored crashed my computer... I stopped there, I didn't want to get any more depressed because my 280x worked miles better.

Drivers? Steam doesn’t give a ♥♥♥♥ about AMD users? Could be, anything is possible.

A know for a fact that the Steam Link devs only care about Nvidia, you can't even read "AMD" in the Big Picture hardware streaming menu.

So yeah, the link is an abandon thing now.

Slice I have 2 960 nvidia rigs and a 280 amd rig (all 8350 processors) and there is little to no difference when streaming to my link.

Not great news at all.

Slice, have you tried one 480 on it's own?

I'm still awaiting delivery.....

If you upgrade or replace cards, you always *must* clean out /etc/ati or /etc/amd ... it contains a binary database of your card settings, and it gets hopelessly confused when the card suddenly changes...
At least that was the case with fglrx... Maybe it is different with amdgpu...
Anyway: it is on my list to replace my R9-270... I have never seen crossfire actually help rendering what a single card couldn't already handle.

i m looking for replacement for my r9 270. if 480 is not a good option for steaming, may be i will rather choose a 970

MY XFX 480 performs decently on most games (streaming wise). So far i'm only noticing stuttering in dark souls 2 SoTFS. Everything else runs pretty much as it appears on my Rig with hardware encoding/decoding on. Some games just appear as a black (blank) screen on my tv just as it was before with my two nividia GPUs. I wouldn't count AMD out just yet.

Steam somehow punish AMD for a reason I still cannot comprehend.

If you take a look into the Big Picture settings, under the enconding settings, the AMD option is nowhere it could be seem, in fact, there isnt any AMD specific switch, still, you can find a Nvidia one, also an Intel one.

Since I bought this thing last year, I have been waiting for propper AMD support, I guess I will be waiting for another year, since now, Steam development, seems in pause...

They blame AMD, AMD blame Valve, the thing is, user (us) should blame both.

AMD needs a propper support, same with Nvidia or Intel, no less, no more.

Maybe you come here saying, "hey dunno what you are talking, everything is fine on my side" but remember that not everygame plays nice, not every setup, crossfirex support is forgotten also.

I am having crashes with Dishonored, sick slideshows playing witcher etc etc etc (when in my main rig I can push those with more than 100 fps ( x2 rx480)

I had the same problems with my old x280, fool of me I thought new card would work better.

Could you just, for once, fix the AMD damm problem?
