Steam Link

Windows Admin functions disable steam link control
Anytime I do anything that requires elevated permission my remote input via Link is disabled. I've tried running steam with admin level, but it doesn't make a difference. And it's surprising how many things require elevated permissions. Any ideas? Please?

Not sure, I use Linux. Why isn't your main Windows account not an administrator? What are you doing that prompts UAC?

That's the thing. My main account is an admin. But things that require admin privileges block steam control. I.e. control panel, manage computer, or installing/uninstalling anything, or anything else that requires the UAC (whether it's on or off).

Strange. If UAC is off for an admin account, you should never get that.

I prefer to have it on, so I only tested it with it off. But I might turn it back on it. I tend to download stuff that I don't entirely trust and like to have the UAC enabled in case things are trying to install themselves in the background :)

Known issue with Windows and the link. Any admin/uac calls will 'lock' the link out. Last I knew valve were looking into workarounds.
I game on Linux now as well, which negates the problem for us.

I wonder what you're doing because hardly anything on Windows needs administrative privileges. So what are you doing?

Some stupid things require UAC. They shouldn't, but they do.
For the normal things, installing and uninstalling software is the usual reason.

Also, I recall the steam controller on my pc doing the exact same thing, so it may not only be tied to steam link.

Still looking for a fix, though

I've had to deal with this too. It's dreadfully irritating. Fortunately, you can just turn UAC off. http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-turn-off-and-disable-uac-in-windows-10/

this is sooooo frustrating, any tips? any workarounds yet?

Steam Link is not a remote administrative tool, this is the correct behaviour.

Yes, set up your PC in a way that you dont need to do administrative tasks all the time.

The problem is still around two years later. Heck, I can't even use my media player of choice because I start it up elevated. Nevermind having to occasionally use the Task Manager or certain quality of life tools.

A media player should not require admin elevation. Nor should any game. Admin tools like task manager are outside the scope of what the Steam Link is intended to do.

What he said. No "Quality of life" tool needs administrative privileges, no media player needs them. If you want to ADMINISTRATE your computer remotely, then the steam link is the wrong tool for you. Use a slim client and Windows Remote Desktop for administrative tasks (or Powershell remoting, that's an extremely powerful tool for administration).

In case you missed it, plenty of times you *have* to open the Task Manager for various reasons, like closing a game that gets stuck (either by freezing or not properly ending its process(es). Nevermind changing core allocations, which is required for some older games to run properly as well. Heck, simple performance monitoring is also a thing.
My media player for example uses a separate remote control software and running both the remote and the program elevated results in the most consistent results. As it is, I cannot even right-click the tray icon to close it without the stream controls to freeze entirely.

I frankly do not give a damn about your personal opinions regarding what should or should not require admin privileges. Fact of the matter is, various things in my workflow on the PC *do* need them. Even just updating a piece of software or installing something outside of Steam can cause the controls to stop function. It's not something that should be happening, at least not without a workaround / way to disable the "feature" if it indeed is one.

What may not be a problem for you, or even something you'd consider necessary, is something natural and necessary for my system as it is and has been for years. Frankly, it works like a charm and the only sore spot is the Link, which hasn't been the most stable device I've owned anyway.
