Steam Link

Wake on LAN with a DisplayPort Monitor- doesn't work
My aim was to use my Steam Link to replace my games console. I set up everything for the Link to remotely turn on the PC via WOL but with the monitor turned off the resolution is very low (it was around 900x500 IIRC)

After more digging I found out the 'problem' is my monitor's connection: it's a function of DisplayPort connections to not send the EDID (monitor info) to Windows when it's powered off. This means Windows thinks there's no display connected and reverts to a universal low resolution that's compatible with all monitors.

I googled and used a registry hack to get the desktop to default to 1080p but I can't get round the problem of the graphics card not recognising a monitor: when a game queries the graphics card for available resolutions it gets no info back, again defaulting all games to low resolutions and only going as high as offering 900p.

As I was looking at a Steam Link being a replacement for a console I don't think I can ignore this. As lazy as it sounds, if I want to fire up Steam for a quick game in the living room I have to go upstairs and turn on the monitor (despite setting up WOL so the Link can remotely turn on the PC and being willing to having Windows auto sign-in to my account).

For those with a standard DVI/HDMI monitor this shouldn't be a problem but it's a deal breaker for me. My monitor runs at 144Hz and I'm not willing to switch to HDMI and drop it to 60Hz for the sake of Steam Link, and DVI is a no-go because I use the monitor's speakers for sound.

I'm in a pickle now as a refund from Game is the obvious answer but I had to buy it in a bundle which included a Steam voucher- even though I haven't used it I'll doubt they'll take it back.

It's a shame because I think the Steam Controller is truly revolutionary for console-style experiences: the trackpad and gyro have immense potential.

(I also didn't get a satisfactory workaround for sound doing weird things on my Link: it auto-mutes the monitor's speakers when the Link is activated yet tries to use that for audio. I had to set up the sound software to not automatically mute, but this meant manually changing sound source when plugging in headphones when sat at the PC. Oh and the display time on the Link wouldn't drop below 40ms despite being on a wired & good quality powerline connection)

This isn't necessarily a criticism of Valve because it seems more like a Microsoft problem. Regardless, I don't think I can keep my Link.

Probably not of any use but relevant specs:

i5 6600k @ 4.5GHz
4GB r9 380
8GB RAM
Windows 10 Anniversary
AOC G2770PF monitor

Setup is:

PC > (Powerline with 4ms ping time to router) > router > (Cat 5e ethernet) > Link

Use a master-slave or USB-controlled power strip to turn on the monitor when the PC turns on. I have one of those and they're fantastic!
