Steam Link
Can i plug the steam link directly to my PC via Ethernet?
I have my PC in my room, and the adjacent room is my TV and console setup. It would be really easy for me to plug an ethernet cable (or crossover ethernet cable) from the PC to the steamlink in the other room.

Otherwise, it will have to go over a so-so wireless AC connection, which I am unable to directly plug everything into.

Does it work in this configuration? Or would I need to go to my router.

You don't need to go through the router, it's perfectly fine to connect the Link with your PC via ethernet cable. I did that since i bought it in last november and it workes perfectly.

Make sure to connect it to your wifi too, so it can download updates.

Just use internet sharing on the ethernet port.

It should be doable. You will need to manually assign IP addresses and subnet addresses on both ends, but I don't see how it can't be done.

That's not nececcary. Automatically assigned IPs via DHCP on the PC works perfectly fine.

I would also love to know how to do this. I'm connected via wifi, and also have an Ethernet cable directly connecting my pc to my steam link. Are there any settings I need to change on pc or steam link? I'm pretty sure it's just running on the Wi-Fi and the cable that's plugged in isn't doing anything.

Thanks for any help.

I misread .. why would you want to plug the link into your pc.. Thats counter intuitive. Plug into your TV..and network it. The hardware wants to be on the tv side .. the network is whatever you can best figure out.

As an admin on the network you can give access. Inside of steam just enable streaming.

I, too, wish to continue directly to my pc. The reason is that I don't have a modem available and there will be kids who want to play on the TV. Can't play on TV without the steam link and it requires Ethernet/wifi. There's no modem in the house, so the only way to achieve this is by connecting directly to the pc. Otherwise i get a bunch of b****ds hovering all over my pc and i refuse to allow that.

Wow, I've got to say I'm shocked that all just works!

Sure wouldn't have in the past...and of course requires that the PC's Ethernet port handles...I don't even remember what it's called anymore, that "reverse mode" for doing stuff like this. Very cool it works! Sort of becomes like having an extra long HDMI cable then!

Can any one tell me how to plug my ethernet port directly to my steam link with Windows 10 it doesn't seem to let me do anything and on my steam link it just shows up as no internet

You shouldn't need to do anything beyond plugging in the ethernet cable to both your PC and Steam Link for the Link to see your Steam library. However for the Link to have internet access you need to use internet sharing.

I'll be honest though, I used to have it setup this way but for a long time I have been unable to use internet sharing in Windows 10. I found a lot of comments on forums about it.

For now I connect to the wifi instead when I want to download an update to the link.

Hey, for those struggling with Windows 10 Wi-Fi sharing I was able to find the solution. I'm not sure exactly where your lost, but for me there was no drop down menu for me to choose which device to share to in the adapter settings. To get that option you need to set up a microsoft hosted virtual network. Which can be done in the command prompt by running this command:

NETSH WLAN start hostednetwork

Which will then open up a virtual network in the network connection settings that you can then use to share your Wi-Fi to the Steam Link. The network should have a name like "local area connection 16".

-Right click on the virtual network and go to properties
-Click on the sharing tab
-Check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection"
-Use the drop down menu to choose your Ethernet cable.
