steam deck ? or steam link ? for link are answers below
it depends on your router wifi, lags and frezes shows low throughput you can adjust it in link settings, if you give some more information about your router (name, model) your mac model and info about link (app or hardware) i will be able to recomend you some settings, to work with it or what to replace for best performance
it is not possible since steam link is designed to operate in a network, you need router
not possible as far as i know
not possible you need router
a lot of people and it is not working this way
You are not the first nor the last, that have no time to search ... but you've done it in a kind way, not demand, so probably I could help you or someone else will do it
just make sure wifi isolation is disabled on the router
and any vpn is disabled
and windows network is set to private not public
and steam -> settings -> remote play -> allow direct connection = all/my/auto
then it will allow direct connection between host and client, not using steams internet relays

I have too devices. A Stem Deck and a MacBook Air M1. I want to connect them to play with Steam Deck on my Macbook screen. For that I project to use Steam link.
So the answer is : both.
I’m French living in France. I don’t have a « router ». I have what we (in France) name a « box » witch was provide by my ISP. My ISP brand is named : FREE the « box » he provide to me is named : « DELTA ».
I’m on Wi-Fi 5GHz. Band is 80MHz. I’m between one and two meters from this box….
I don’t really know what else to say. If you have accurate question I can try to find the answer.
Ok I’m not an expert. Needing a router don’t mean I need an ISP? Is that correct?
Can I use an USB>Ethernet adaptor connected to a router himself connected to another USB>Ethernet adaptor?
It’s what I thought :(
To _I_
I don’t know what is this. I’m going to search
Ok
I’m on Mac and Steam Deck is under Linux. So I suppose not being concerned
Sorry you’re going too fast for me. You mean I can make a direct connection without Steam Link?
if you want to stream your way, you need to turn performance overlay in steam link settings, that graph will tell you what is limiting your connection, if network, be sure that both link and deck are connected to 5ghz network, usually isps sets same names and passwords for 2.4 and 5ghz that sometimes gives connections to wireless 2.4 instead of 5ghz check it and post back screens (to take screenshot use start button and x as far as i remember but there will be information what to press to take screenshot)
second problem is that i do not own mac ... so only iphone and ipad ... but it should be similar to windows and linux, we can try same settings on mac, if they do not work, we will try to ask someone on mac subforum
he is known here as fake info provider, never listen to him, he will give you advice to ping your link ... just ignore
if anything is blocking direct connection, it can use steams internet relays
streaming from home to a friends or if mobile device is using mobile data instead of wifi
or if router has wifi isolation enabled, it will block data going between wifi and lan devices
if direct connection is disabled, any any of the above are preventing it, remote play will not work
host -> router -> client
vs
host -> router -> isp -> steam relay -> isp -> router -> client
Direct connect via ethernet cable and dock works as this guy shows it here:

MacBook needs to be in "using DHCP" so it receives an adress of the local-link range.
