AVAST messing with SteamLink - 2 ways to fix it
hey fellas I been ♥♥♥♥♥♥ arround with this for a few days now and found few bits and pieces on this forum and other forums and finally got a to a point were my steamlink can connect to my computer which runs avast without disabling the firewall - since that kinda defeats the purpose right?
anyway I thought I just post what I found in case some other lost souls are embarking on the same journey that i just completlede.
now first things first avast is GARBAGE and if i hadnt paid few $$ for the service for the year id simply get rid of it. having said that these things tend to fix it for certain ppl
1# from the first screnn u click on protection (little padlock on the left) than click on application settings (bottom right) look up steam client bootstrapper - click on PACKET RULES and there you will find 3 things, internet out internet in and efault the first two should be set to allow tcp/udp and out/in respectively and no need on your part do do anything.
the 3rd one default under ACTION might have it set to auto-decide - change that to allow
than click on OK (in green) on the bottom right corner...and dont X out like i did about 2 dozen times....
now for many ppl that seems to be the end of it and godspeed to you.
for me it unfortunately wasnt since it turns out when i first connected to my home network I must have told avast that it was a public network or it defaulted to that setting I dont know/ remember
2# To change that you go back to the main screen with all the little widgets that are more of a roadblock than helpfull and click on setting (bottom left corner)
than you click on components scroll down till u get to FIREWALL click customize and than look for Network profiles - there you should see in BOLD the network you are currently connected to with a dropdown menu next to it - assuming its a save network ensure it says PRIVATE, somehow that seems to make the entire antivirus software from avast A LOT more laid back - no clue if that opens you to issues on other ends but at least I can stream SWTOR now to my link without haivng to disable the firewall, hope that helps

Thank you, this was really helpful, after half an hour I found out that Avast is the troublemaker, so I just turned off the firewall. But thanks to you I just switched to Private network and it is all good. Activated Avast only coz I got free code for a year-long license.

Thank you! This has resolved my issue. Valve should include this on their help page.

Thanks man, this did the trick. Was messing around with this for ages! It was the 'set to private' that did it for me. Cheers.
