Steam Link

Steam Link

Remote Play together from Steam Link App alone?
My son has a good friend, and they frequently use remote play together - its an awesome feature.

But his friend's computer is relatively weak and old, and often becomes a problem to use. The situation has been worsening.

So we are exploring other avenues through which the kids could potentially play steam games together.

I have been trying to determine how steam link might have us solve the problem (if at all).

My questions is ultimately whether the friend would necessarily need a PC to remote play together.

Could the friend just load Steam Link on his phone (or other device), without a PC around, and then still be able to accept a steam invite to "Remote Play Together" from our PC?

(In other words, the essential question is whether the friend, from his end, could accept an invite to remote play together, even if he DOES NOT have a local PC available; The intent would still be to invite from OUR regular PC, which runs steam and all of the games quite well).

I recognize that there will be some important connectivity limitations and issues here, but I am trying to determine what is actually possible, if the friend does NOT have a functional PC.

the link hardware or app could work with remote play
the host can stream to multiple devices at the same time

it will work similar to play together, but remote play can give the 'friend' complete control of the pc anytime, instead of just allowing him to play the game

Does it need to be on the same lan, or can it be done entirely over the internet for sure?

The friend is considering doing it with a rasberry pi.

They would put steam link on the pi, run the app, log in, and then we invite them as normal from the pc (via internet)?

It can be done over the Internet but there's no login/invite. It's not remote play together.

They will have access to your PC/account as if they were on the same LAN and they'll be able to stream whatever runs on your PC.

I believe that if a game supports local-coop, local-PVP, then you will be able to play together, as if you were on the same PC but that's all. You won't even have Steam voice chat, since you're playing on the same account.

That is precisely the goal - to play games with local play capabilities. That os essentially what we do with remote play together now.

So do we just setup steam link on the pi? Or is it another app that is needed?

Problem is, i am under the impression that steam link wants to connect to a local pc. And the friend would not have that. (See original post)

I know with Android if you can install both the Steam Link app and Steam Chat apps then you can login and accept remote play invites remotely, just like on the desktop.

I'm actually not sure about the Raspberry Pi app though. Obviously you can run the app and access Steam Chat via the web on the same device, but I have no idea if remote play invites work in that environment.

with remote play you do not need an invite, just connect to the host

They're asking about Remote Play Together, which does use invites.

Well, essentially, i have a pc and the friend has a raspberry pi. So i am trying to find out the easiest way to play together. I assumed it was remote play together, but it might be remote play anywhere. And then i know there is parsec too, i suppose. But i would just as soon keep it all steam.

The questions are:

1) whether the friend needs a pc, or could the raspberry pi alone, on his end, be enough

2) what would be the easiest way to setup for play (remote play together, remote play anywhere, parsec, etc.)

android, pi and tv apps use link app not play together

steam should add a play together option to remote play apps and link hardware

Im resurrecting this thread, because i am still a bit unclear.

If i want to connect with a pi via steamlink, do i initally need to establish the connection locally? (Meaning, do i need to have both devices local the first time??)

Otherwise, im not really clear how to make the connection, because the pi only seems to recognize local machines.

How does connecting work, if you are are NOT on the same network?
Can it be done?

lan is perferred
but it can work using steam internet relay servers

you just need access to the host to enter the pin device code

Even if you arent on same network?

So they just log into steam link on the pi, and... enter my steam link code?

If you want to pair a Steam Link client, any version, to your PC so that you can play your own games remotely then it can be done both locally or remotely (via pairing code in settings, remote play, pair Steam Link).

If you want to use Steam Remote Play Together to allow a friend to join you in multiplayer games then you need a device which can use both Remote Play/Steam Link and Steam Chat. This does not require pairing, but does require your friend to log into Steam Chat so they can see and accept your invite.

While I have tested this on Android using both apps in tandem, I do not know if the Raspberry Pi Steam Link app will cooperate with the Steam Chat web client to allow this to happen on that platform. You'd just have to try, unless someone who has done it can chime in.

I guess the only other question would be what happens when i remote play to a pi with steam link?

In theory, i assume the steam link can see my steam in big picture and play games.

But... Would i still see what is happening locally from the host machine, and could i play as a second player in whatever game is running, assuming the game being played supports "local" multiplayer?

In other words, can i use basic remote play to game with the friend on pi... Or does he actually need a different device with steam chat to actually do "remote play together."

I wish this stuff was documented better...
