Trying to set up DS4 as Xbox pad
I have an OG Steam Link.
I'm trying to play Alien Isolation (from Epic Store) on my TV, using a DS4 controller.

Unfortunately unless I want to try rebinding all my controls to be PC controls, once the game starts I can't even walk around.

On my PC, the game does work if I use DS4Windows to get my controller interpreted as an Xbox Pad. All good. But I don't think that works with Steam Link.

Is there a way to tell Steam "interpret my DS4 as being a 360 controller"?

Did you enable Playstation Support in controller config?

Playstation Support is enabled and so Steam Link recognises my DS4 and lets me remap the buttons, but I can't see how to tell Steam "yes, please recognise my controller, but pretend it's an Xbox pad because this game doesn't recognise other pads".

Steam Link will generally pass all controllers as Xbox controllers, due to the way that remote play controller input hooks work. The problem is most likely that the Epic Store version of Alien Isolation isn't being properly detected and it's still trying to use the "desktop" controller config, which sends mouse input instead of controller.

How did you go about adding the game to Steam?

Yeah, that's probably the issue.
Added to steam via 'Add a Non-steam game to my library', folder path D:/EpicGames/EpicLibrary/AlienIsolation/AI.exe

Connect DS4 - launch game - main menu mostly works, shows keyboard tooltips in bottom-right ("Press ESC to go back"). On starting game, can't walk around. When trying to remap control inputs, buttons are recognised as keyboard prompts (e.g. trigger is interpreted as left click).

Start DS4Windows - steam recognises DS4 as Xbox controller instead - launch game - main menu works, shows Xbox tooltips in bottom right. Game runs fine.

If you hold start do you get the config overlay popup? There's an option there to switch between desktop/mouse and controller inputs.

Also, have you tried adding the Epic Launcher itself as a non-steam game rather than the individual games within it?

Not sure if I've got my settings set up wrong - holding start does nothing. Hitting the PS button to bring up Steam Big Picture kicks me back to the game launch screen so I can't change anything.

I've added Epic Launcher but it's not really usable with the controller setup.

I tried using this guide https://seanzwrites.com/posts/how-to-play-epic-games-on-steam-and-steamlink/ to add the game as a powershell script that launches the game through Epic, but still no dice - the game refuses to acknowledge my controller as a controller and still thinks it's pretending to be a keyboard.

There is a different client-side overlay when holding start, distinct from big picture, that lets you switch between desktop and controller configs on the Android app. Unfortunately that's where all of my more recent experience is from. =/

Looks like this (bar along the bottom): https://preview.redd.it/dy3qr024bms41.jpg?width=3718&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83f4c93a1ba1a729b18605d1b0f3fa74e9dcb700

The option to enable disable it might be somewhere in the advanced client settings called something like "controller overlay".

Looks like this is a known issue with Alien Isolation based on this thread. All my other Epic Games work. Even setting up a Desktop Configuration doesn't quite work. Only recourse is to manually map all buttons.
