Steam Link

Steam Link

Can I use the xbox one's messenger pad while using the Steam link?
I play a few games thru steam using the steam link with an xbox one controller and it's wireless adapter plugged into the steam link. I was wondering if i would be able to use the xbox one messenger pad if it was connected while playing say Fallout 4 and wanted to rename a robot or a weapon I crafted instead of having to move over to the pc keyboard to do so.

If you're connecting via the wireless adapter, I assume that means you're using VirtualHere.

VirtualHere allows any device to act as if it's connected directly to the PC, so if you use it to connect either the wireless adapter, or the controller using a cable, you can use the Chat Keypad accessory as well as a headset connected to the controller. I have used both simultanesouly for Rocket League several times.

Thanks for the response, I'll have to try it out. I only wondered because i tried the same thing originally with a 360 wireless controller and it's adapter and it never seemed to work.

The 360's pad has no native PC support at all. If the Xbox One pad works when plugged directly into your PC, then it should also work via the link. If, like the 360's, it does not, then I would not expect it to.

Unfortunately, only the gamepad part of the Xbox One controllers works natively with the Link. To use the Wireless Receiver, the Chatpad, or a headset connected to the controller, you would need to use VirtualHere to have them send their connection on to the PC to be handled correctly.

You would set the gamepad that the chatpad is connected to up to use VirtualHere, then the PC will correctly recognize both.

You will want to connect to the PC directly first and do any firmware upgrades using the Xbox Accessories app from the Windows 10 Store.

Odd, i hooked up the gamepad w/chatpad connected to the pc first, did an update, tried loading a game on steam via steamlink and once in game i was still able to use the gamepad but wasn't able to use the chatpad for anything.

To use the gamepad via steamlink I've had to keep a usb plug to have the gamepad plugged in initially to start it up, but once in game i'm able to run it wirelessly.

Open something like Notepad and see if you can type at all. Did you try disconnecting and then reconnecting the Chatpad after the updates?

Also, the Chatpad and other Xbox One Controller Accessories only work on Windows 10.

It did work initially after unplugging and re plugging in a few things.(realized it'd only recognize the chatpad once i removed the usb connection from the gamepad and it shifted to wireless signal)
Strangely enough now the wireless adapter is no longer working. no light signifying its on. I tried plugging both it and the gamepad back up to the pc directly and everything worked fine. but once I re plug in the wireless adapter to the steam link it's like it's dead. No idea what caused this as it was working fine just last night :/

You can pair a BT keyboard with the link and use that to rename stuff.

Make sure that the Wireless Receiver (called "XBOX ACC") is set to be shared in the Steam Link's VirtualHere system menu. You should also be able to share the controller when it is connected with USB this way.

Also make sure that VirtualHere for Steam Link is still installed on your PC.

for some reason after some unplug/plug back in it seemed to fix itself. Course it's very possible I was just overlooking something blatantly obvious.
Thanks everyone for the input/help on this :)
