Steam Link

Nintendo-Switch like controller for tablets and Steam Link App (iOS)
I am trying to play games on the sofa, Nintendo-Switch style, by streaming games to my mobile devices.

I intend to emulate the layout of a portable-mode Nintendo Switch with docked controllers using the iOS app with an iPad Air 2 and thus was wondering if there is any suitable controller hardware, and whether anyone has experience with it.

Possible options

I know that there are options available from "Gamevice", but I see two potential issues:
(a)Mobile controllers typically have abysmal analog sticks compare to an Xbox One or Xbox 360 controller. I have seen options, that would register only 8 discrete directions (instead of 32 or more on standard PC controllers).
(b)Apple's MFi standard omits clickable analog sticks, which is a breaking issue for many games, and a major annoyance for others. So I assume that hardware would have to specifically target the SteamLink app for it to work properly.

I tried to do it with a Smartphone mount for my Xbox One controller before, but found the display too small. (Also, the Galaxy S7 does something that results in choppy streaming across all such apps. Complains result in "not supported by Samsung".)

I am also curious about something like this, unfortunately I don't have any new info to offer. Using iPad OS with Xbox or PS4 controller seems like the best so far, but then you have to use tablet top mode, not really grip on the sides.

As alternative, I am now using "tablet cushions" for convenient placement of the tablet while playing with an XBox One controller.

Meanwhile, with iOS 13 supporting the XBox One for PC controller, together with having found convenient solutions like the tablet cushion, I actually prefer playing on the iPad over PC. Sadly, I never got in-home streaming to work without recurring hiccups, even when connecting directly to a USB Wifi antenna on my PC.

Also, it turns out that even the actual Nintendo Switch doesn't quite compare in terms of convenience; Holding the tablet, instead of resting it on the legs and holding only a controller, is quite a lot less convenient than the tablet setup. Never mind, that an iPad with attached controller would be, judging from my shortlived experience with the Game Vice,

  • Uncomfortably heavy
  • Too wide, straining the shoulders

The gamevice specifically was also very hard to detach, which is quite an issue for a multi-purpose device.

So really, the best solution is NOT to use tablet-mounted controllers. The Switch pulls it off, but only due to it being a dedicated gaming device, and by being much smaller than an iPad.

There is a button "Formatting help" left of "Post Comment", which documents the syntax.

Would this device work? Im looking for something like this. But I can't vouch for that device. I want it to work natively like a controller works on pc. Thats possible with the steam link app? You don't have to like set up the touch screen controls to work with the controller buttons? (I've seen things like this for some "Android game controllers")

Looks interesting. In practice though, my experience with mobile controllers is abysmal; They often have thumbsticks that provide barely more precision than the digital pad, with badly configured dead-zones and small directional resolution. Mounting and unmounting the phone can also be awkward with the "switch-like" designs. (Though one could argue that, by order of release date, the Switch is "Gamevice-like".)

Meanwhile I've come to two insights:

1. Tablets are too heavy and too large to be used comfortably with attached controllers. Better to buy a tablet stand or "table pillow" and use an existing PC controller. (iPad support the XBox One controller, which is the best price-to-quality porposition I've seen.)

2. If you already have a PC controller, that can be connected to the phone, you'll probably get a better experience out of buying a phone-mount for that controller. For mainstream controllers, there should be inexpensive solutions.
