Steam Link

What wifi router would you recomend for lag-free streaming experience.
Hello,

My situation is the following:

I have no problem connecting Steam link to the router , as wifi router sits right behind the TV.

The problem is that a computer from which I stream the game on Steam Link is connected via Wifi.

So the streaming runs smooth for around 10 seconds, then I get 2-3 seconds long lag spike, then again 10 seconds smooth, then again a lag spike.

I have some kind of assumption, that buying new router which works with 11ac protocol would resolve this problem, but I'm not sure.

Please advise.

are you using the hardware encryption in the streaming options?
i solved all my lag spikes by disabling it.

Don't remember. Gotta get back home and see.
But as far as I remember, I tried all kinds of options. Maybe not.
Thanks for the tip.

By the way, what does it do? Encrypts connection?

most ac routers are good enough

basic things to look for is gigabit lan ports, dual core or better arm
16+mb flash and more ram
something that supports dd-wrt or tomato firmwares
https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/List_of_Tomato_firmware_supported_devices

but lag for 10+sec sounds like interference
microwave oven is a good source for that
any decent 5ghz router, with at least 3 antennas, asus rt ac 68 u (i am using it) netgear r7000 (nighthawk) or similar, they are not cheap but work flawlesly, if you are not intrested in high security (safe) consider dlink or tplink but they are known as flawed firmwares (some security holes and other flaws) so your choice if price is most important choose dlink or tplink, if security is most important choose asus netgear maybe linksys (wrt1900acs) or some future proof asus rt ac 88u, rt ac5300; linksys ac 3200 wrt32x, ea 9500; netgear r7800, r8000 but it will cost more

As far as I know dLink and TPlink are trash and mostly advertised in COS countries.
I was thinking of one of the newer Xiami routers.

But the same was in 5Ghz too

Why would those firmwares help?

As for the hardware particulars, you you brought, I believe something like “Mi Wi-Fi Router 3G White” would be good enough.

dd-wrt or tomato are excellent firmwares for routers
if the router supports them, the hardware is more than good enough
xiaomi ? is made, designed, programed and invented in china, i would higly recomend for security reasons to avoid that kind of compilation, tomato or ddwrt is nice if you like to dig in settings, for simply plug and play, netgear, asus, linksys would be better choice if you want somthing ultra cheap and efficientin in that price range (~50€) you will not find any decent router, that mi 3g is even worse than you called "trash dlink and tplink" so buy that trash and do not count on good performance, if you want good performance try used, you can find asus or netgear on ebay used for about 75-100€, they work nice and are known for good performance high security (still supported, latest firmware from december) in europe fritzbox is nice option (fritz 4040) but it have build-in antennas so wireles coverage can be worse than external antennas and still more expensive than xiaoshit

BTW

in my opinion fritzbox have most stable firmware on market

I thank you sir mor, thatn you can imagine!
Will notify my friends that Mi is no good, to say the least.

Would you approve ASUS RT-ACRH13 ?
And what about his cheaper brother ASUS RT-AC51U ?

ASUS RT-AC51U this is not worth the price they are asking for
ASUS RT-ACRH13 this should be enough

what is your computer wireles adapter (name, model) steam link supports ac 2x2 up to 866mbps,
what is your current router (name, model)

My current router is Apple alAirport Extreme, first generation. By now its over 8 years old and its modem module has burnt, and wifi works with occasional cuts.

I also keep at home adsl2 modem with router TP-Link TD-W8980.

But I can’t connect it to my modem, if possible at all.
On Monday I plan to call my ISP to fibd out, whether they can advice VPI/VCI number to set up this TP-link.
But I tried it already as a router offline with Steam Link.
It seems the latency spikes were the same or similar, and also its does not have 11ac.
yeah and latest firmware is almost 4 years old, two things, does your computer supports 5ghz network, if not you need to upgrade your wireles adapter in your computer, if it support 5ghz try with that tplink, set up 5ghz network and try streaming that way

another thing, just for test purposes try ethernet wires on link side and pc side just for test to exclude hardware limitations

With ethernet on PC side it runs well.
But in that case I’m better off with good old HDMI
so maybe router is ok but your pc wireles adapter is too slow ?? what is the name and model of your wireles adapter in your computer ??
