Steam Link

Fallout 4 + steam link = infinite loading screen
Haven't played on my steam link in a while, but tried again this weekend. I found an annoying bug with Fallout 4.

Whenever I play the game through steam link, the loading screens from exterior to interior (say, Commonwealth to inside a house) become infinite loading screens.

What I've tried:
  • Disabling G-Sync on host computer
  • Disabling all mods and tweaks. I was running with Shadowboost (removed it) and Reshade (removed it). Then verified game cache and removed all .ini tweaks (Had custom FOV + some other minor things) by just removing the ini files and letting the launcher re-write them.
  • Running the game windowed / fullscreen
  • Enabling / disabling v-sync

The problem does not occur when I'm just playing on the host PC itself.

Latest Nvidia drivers, latest windows updates. GTX 1070TI, Windows 10.

Hey man. I'm having the same problem you had did you ever find a solution?

I've noticed that if I am playing with my monitor off and I get an infinite load, if I turn the monitor on the game completes the load and vice versa if the monitor is on I have to switch it off and then back on again.

It's frustrating.

I have a great spec so I know there are no perfomance issues - you're the only one I've found so far having the exact same problem using the Steam Link.

1080TI Windows 10.

For anyone that might have the same problem in future I found a fix.

There's a mod in Nexus Mods that disables vsync on the loading screen. Having been waiting up to 15 minutes for a load it now takes 5 seconds. Put these 2 little files in your Fallout 4 folder - problem solved..!

That mod only helps (at least for me) when I run the came locally from the host PC. Streaming over Steam Link, it loses its magic after a little bit.
Never had issues like this before with worse PC's. I'm thinking the 4k source may be choking the stream to a 1080p TV somehow. No clue how.
Glad I'm not alone.

Did you guys found a fix w/o using any 3rd party software/files? I am currently experiencing this problem after I upgraded my Monitor to a QHD 144Hz with Adaptive GSync.

Nope. But I found out earlier that Fallout 4 will stream using Steam Link if I keep the PC Monitor turned ON. Some other titles I tested will normally work/stream in Steam Link hardware though even if the Monitor is turned OFF.

if the host is on, it should be using a display
or follow the headless instructions

His solution won't work for me though because I need to use a DisplayPort connection and not HDMI. That is a requirement for Adaptive Gync to work on an AMD Freesync Monitor. I think my issue is connected to how a game like Fallout 4 processes instructions coming from the Nvidia Control Panel software. I am guessing the fix should probably come from Bethesda to patch their game. A more modern title like Deathstranding works just fine through Steam Link hardware even if my PC Monitor is turned OFF. I just haven't noticed though if the Adaptive Gsync feature is still working in-game if I do that.

No worries, I can still play Fallout 4 through Steam Link if I want. I just have to keep my PC Monitor turned ON... or I can just directly play it on the Host PC. Anyhow, thanks for the tips! :-)

UPDATE: My issue has been finally solved by checking Windowed Mode and Borderless in the Fallout 4 Launcher as suggested by Bethesda Tech Support.

Now, my next problem is launching No Man's Sky in Steam Link. But that's OOT. Many thanks to those who have tried to assist me here.

EDIT: To confirm if Gsync is working, check the G-SYNC Compatible Indicator option under the Display menu of the Nvidia Control Panel. Remember, you have to select an option under the Display section on the left side of the panel first for the Display dropdown menu to appear.

When you have this checked, you will notice on the upper-right section of the in-game screen will indicate "G-SYNC" in green color text. But keep in mind that this will only work if your game is in Full Screen mode.

I am running in Borderless Window, have a solid network and a fairly fast PC but I still have this infinite load time issues. It happens most often during transitioning locations. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the save/load that Fallout does with every transition. It's very frustrating because, otherwise, it runs beautifully.

Try capping the fps to 60 on the NVidia menu, It Works for me
