How to enable the secure desktop prompt on the Windows 10 login screen while streaming
Hi, I'm using steam link on an android device with streaming desktop enabled.

My computer is set to return to the lock screen (password protected) when idle for a couple of minutes. The very first time this happened while streaming, I tried to log in using the keyboard map on the android app. None of the keys worked, and a popup appeared requesting authorisation for steam link to be able to type in the login box, something about "secure desktop input", which I unfortunately didn't screenshot.

The prompt forced me to log in physically at my computer unless I selected "ok", which would grant access for the android device to log in. I selected 'ok' because it seemed convenient to be able to log back in via android app while streaming. This worked fine and I was able to login with no problems, but my question now is, how can I re-enable that prompt to provide that extra layer of security? I've looked around in the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy options, but none of the options seem to be able to bring that prompt back.

Essentially, what I want is to prevent steam link clients from being able to log into my windows user account over Wi-Fi, without having to turn off desktop streaming, or streaming altogether ie. bring back the prompt which forced me to physically log in at my computer.

Thanks in advance!

Somebody knows about this? I allowed it because i wanted to test something but now i want to disable again Steam from being able to interact when uac prompts appears.

Right now i can click on "yes" or "no", which gives me the possibility respectively to: not able to interact until i close the elevated program, or, preserve the access to the system. But it concerns me that now i'm able to access the login in a blocked session, as this post states, and i'd prefer to have to be present physically on the pc as i'm a little paranoid with the permissions on remote access.

I have searched on the internet about this issue and this is the only post i find that wants to turn back on this option, like me.

I have checked on regedit and steam config files, but i don't seem to find anything.
I can't fully determine if this option is prompted by windows or steam itself, and i suppose it will come back to normal if i reinstall steam, but i'd prefer to avoid doing that.

Any idea is welcomed.

You need to unlock your PC. This is possible when using a remote client that does NOT automatically after the session. I personally recomend VNC server for this. Teamviewer should work the same.

You can RDP into your PC, install VNC, connect from your client to the host and then play.
I know this is not ideal since you have an additional client on your machine, but it's still better than leaving the PC without a password.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I'm running into this issue and steam support said they had no answer for me. Anyone know how to turn the dialog box back on?

Also: uninstalling and reinstalling Steam didn't fix it (which I did before contacting support), neither did uninstalling and reinstalling the steam link app on my phone (which is the only thing support told me to try)

edit: I think I fixed it: regedit -> Valve -> Steam -> SecureDesktop -> InputEnabled , change that from 1 to a 0.

None anywhere mentions how this is done and there seems to be no actual gui setting for it... have an award.

still a problem in 2023.

symptom: First id launch from my laptop to stream from my desktop at home. I would hear the sound, but the screen had that annoying secure desktop prompt, I thought I could switch to teamviewer to fix it but no luck - it would not accept remote key presses or mouse.

solution:
I had teamviewer already installed but vnc would work too. I logged in and modified this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

change PromptOnSecureDesktop registry entry, and then change its value from 1 to 0. save and exit.

Then I rebooted the host machine. The next time I streamed the prompt still came up, but this time i was able to click the 'accept' button as if i was sitting at my desk and everything worked fine. I hope this helps someone.

Thanks, this worked for me :) Came here to add on (sorry for necro) that I found the registry key to edit at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Valve\Steam\SecureDesktop in my case, in case anyone might have difficulty finding the key.
