Steam Link

Low resolution problem
Today I received my Steam Link and I'm running the following setup:

The host PC has three monitors, each with a 1680x1050 resolution. My TV is pretty old and only supports 720p (via DVI).

My PC specs are:
Intel i7 2600
AMD R9 280
12GB RAM
The mainboard is from Intel for the LGA1155 socket, but I can't seem to find the exact model

Everything is connected as follows: Steam Link -> Pioneer VSX-924 A/V Receiver -> TV (via HDMI to DVI adapter).

The problem now is, that the Steam Link always sets the resolution to 720x480, because no matter which resolution I choose, it always tells me, that the device is not supporting it. I've also tried to force the resolution using a USB drive with the screen_resolution file, with no success sadly (An interesting note may be, that the Steam Link also seems to display in 4:3 aspect ratio only while streaming, but not in the startup menu).

My guess is, that the A/V receiver doesn't return the correct/any EDID information to the Steam Link, which my Wii U also suggests, because it says it's running in an unsupported resolution on startup, although everything works fine.

So is there any way to _really_ force the Steam Link into a certain resolution?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Okay, the mainboard is an Intel Desktop Board DH67BL

I forgot to mention that directly connecting the Steam Link to the TV results in the same problem (probably due to the adapter).

make sure the usb stick is formatted fat32
and the file has no extension
explorer -> alt -> tools -> folder options -> untick hide extensions
then rename and remove it

the tv does not have hdmi, only dvi?

The TV sadly only has DVI, it's an old LG RZ-32LZ55 (approx. 10 years old). The file had no extension and the drive is formatted in FAT32.

I've checked the EDID data from the steamlink_debug file, and as it turns out the A/V receiver only returns 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 as standard display modes. Strange...

also check the path for the file
usb:\steamlink\config\system\display_resolution
reboot by unplugging power

does the receiver have options to fake/force edid for 720p? (1280x720)

but the best option would be a newer 1080p tv with hdmi ports
id recomend a dumb tv or smart with game mode

but 16:10 to 16:9 will add black bars on the sides, and still look good

The path is correct, yes. The receiver does support resolution scaling, but it only allows choosing the 480/576p as input, for whatever reason. And a new TV really isn't an option for me.

the receiver may be forwarding the edid from the tv or converter

if its analog only, the converter may be only showing 4:3 resolutons
look at the tv, if it uses the 4 pins near the horiz bar its analog

It's a DVI-D adapter, but good point.

So, I'm a little confused. From your description it sounds like your PC is already hooked up to the TV? What are you using the Link for?

Oh right, I messed that up xD The "PC" shoud of course be the Steam Link
_I_ May 4, 2018 @ 5:53am
the link may be overriding the usb res since edid is showing only lower ones

pc can be set to force res outside edid range, not sure about the link

But the Link is running some Linux derivative, so theoretically it should be able to just force a resolution as well. I just tried the Beta build, to no avail

And _I_ it seems you correctly guessed with the receiver simply forwarding the EDID.
