Steam Link

Steam Link

"Couldn't start streaming on the remote computer" suddenly! Please help!
Hi All,

I can't get my steam link to start streaming. It recognizes the PC is there, it recognizes that it's running steam, but it keeps failing to launch the stream.

I suspect this may have something to do with my recent installation of a VPN. I have since disabled it and stopped it from launching on startup, but maybe there's a setting somewhere that it changed?

I've been reading a bunch of threads on people having this error but nothing has worked for me. I've tried:

- factory reseting my Steam Link
- Network reset on my PC
- Rebooting the computer and the steam link
- blocking my VPN from launching on startup

None of this has fixed it. Any help is much appreciated.

FIXED! Uninstalling Steam fixed it. Thanks @MrSyFyGamer! No idea why this problem started in the first place, though.

Has anyone figured this out? Mine has recently started doing the same thing a few days ago and I've tried everything. Updated every driver imaginable. stopped every service and uninstalled vast amounts of software.

My steamlink will connect for a second and then disconnect immediately. My PC shows a message that the steamlink connected fine. The streaming logs for the steam client shows everything is connecting ok. But it doesn't start streaming.

Though I just noticed when I switch the setting on the steamlink client to only stream audio and not video, it connects and stays connected. That setting is on the steamlink under settings, streaming, advanced. I disable video and enable audio and input and it can stay connected and stream audio. So it seems like a graphics driver problem of some sort.

I'm having the same problem! I tried everything and nothing worked> I don't know what else to do. I put in a support ticket but I still haven't found a solution! I have come to a conclusion that this might have something to do with steam itself. My pc is fine and i didn't tinker with the settings in any way. Steam has access to ports it needs in firewall so I'm out of options. VALVE PLEASE FIX THIS I BEG YOU.

update: For ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles I tried the Android app for steam link and it does the exact same thing. So the problem is with the steam client on the PC. I also enabled beta Steam client updates and that didn't change the problem. I have the latest updates for the nvidia card in my box. doing netstat on my PC shows the listening ports open and accepting connections and my firewalls are disabled across the board. I also double checked my directx installs.

Right! I forgot to mention I tried it on the android app and it does indeed do the same thing. And this is a problem with the steam Client I feel now you are right.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

UPDATE (STILL NO SOLUTION!):

I have disabled all firewalls, but also added exceptions for every port Steam listed that the link uses.

I am able to ping the device from my host computer.

I have done network reset. I have reset my router and my modem.

I've checked every setting I could think of (Made sure network was set to Private instead of Public, and that network discovery/sharing was on, etc).

For what I can see from every possible thing like we all tried and still failed. This is on steams part now. Something with the steam client.

The router is not the issue, because it doesn't use the router.
Your computer might be in a bad state, steam beta might be in flux, or your wifi drivers of your phone.
In my case, since the update from march, both my Samsung Chromebook and my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 have faulty multicast filters again in the wifi drivers. This means any neighbour discovery fails at that moment, and systems are unable to see my phone, unless they already had the mac in the neighbour (arp) table.
Turning off and on the wifi on my phone usually works.

If you are a windows user: windows has a tendency to ♥♥♥♥ the firewall settings on your computer. Turn the firewall on the computer off.

Edit:
Anyway: just tried it: it works for me (tm)

I turned the firewall off and restarted the computer. Didn't do anything at all.

according to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs and the streaming log, mine last worked on May 11th. I didn't use the steamlink for a couple of weeks and then I went to play a game again on the 24th or 25th and it no longer starts streaming but does connect for a few seconds. So whatever happened was between those two dates. on my windows update history I only see one update since the 11th which was a .NET security and rollup update. I did have an nvidia update. There was at least one steam update released on the 18th but could have been actually applied to people of the course of a few days.

So the only things that changed on my system since the last successful time I used steamlink was Steam client, Microsoftwindows update .net security and rollup patch, Nvidia drivers, and I installed fallout New vegas ultimate edition.

Fallout was the reason I checked my directx X drivers incase it did anything to them. Did you guys install any games?

Nope, I didn't install any new games.

The only thing that changed for me was installing my VPN. But the Steam Link did work the next day, so I'm doubtful it's that.

Update: Still having the same issue! I'm really getting frustrated and mad. Support doesn't have a solution. I don't know what else to do.

Just to make sure we are having the same problem, what does your streaming log say? does it stop right after input streaming enabled? if on the steamlink hardware you turn off video streaming but leave audio and input streaming turned on, can you stay connected and stream audio?
