XBox Elite Controller Series 2 with Steam link issues
I got the new xbox elite controller because it has bluetooth now and I would be able to use it with my steam link. I paired it with my steam link, but the configuration was all messed up. Hitting up on the dpad would set the right stick to the up position and not return it, the right stick would see up/down as left and right, and it wouldn't register left/right at all.

I updated the controller firmware via the xbox accessories app hoping it would fix the issue, but now it fails to pair with the steam link at all. It appears on the list of bluetooth devices, but just says "Bluetooth connection failed: unable to complete pairing.

I can pair it with my phone and then use it via the steamlink app there, so the bluetooth definitely works.

Also tried factory resetting the steam link, but that did not help.

I'm hoping the issue is just that's it's new and will be updated in the next steam link firmware, but I was wondering if anyone has the same issue and has found a workaround.

use a k/m to navigate to the controller menu on the link, and reset to default mappings

it looks like the bt connecting on the link is kinda borked for now

I've been having lag/connectivity issues with the Link using an Xbox One controller, so I decided to try the Xbox Elite Series 2 and see if that would work better. Before the purchase I checked the list of supported controllers, where it states clearly that Elite Series 2 should work both wired and wireless.

However, this doesn't seem to be the case. Wired connection does seem to work, but pairing wirelessly via Bluetooth ends with an error. No input from the controller is registered in wireless mode. I tried
  • updating Steam Link's firmware
  • opting in the Beta branch
  • factory resetting the Link
  • updating the controller's firmware using Xbox Accessories app on Windows 10
None of this helped. I could try to return the controller and get a refund, unless someone has some further ideas on what to try. The elite controller itself feels quite nice. I would like to keep it if possible, but without a good wireless connection its not an option. I'm using the default Link wireless dongle btw, I read somewhere that the dongles that are sold separately wouldn't even work with the Link.

This was posted in 2019 and the same issues persist. I'm trying to understand why it's so difficult to figure this out.

the xbox controllers (that support bt) now work fine with the link hardware

if you are having troubles, try plugging the controller into a pc and use the xbox app to update its firmware
