Steam Link

Xbox One S controller fails bluetooth pairing??!?!
Just bought a new xbox one S controller for a new years party and couldn't get it to work.
Really annoyed about this whole thing!

It HAS bluetooth! Why wouldn't this work???
Steamlink is updated, controller has been updated via xbox accessories app.

Even if I bought a wireless dongle for it, it wouldn't just work then... I'd have to pay for virtualhere on top of that, so £20-40 extra and who knows if that will actually work.

It will pair with my laptop that has bluetooth....(and yes I disconnect afterwards so it's not still connected...)

Steam link picks up the controller, but comes up with a pairing fail after a minute of trying to connect. Sometimes it tries for a minute, and just stops without a fail message.

Both products have been out for a long time, this isn't good enough. We're not talking about some obscure 3rd party hardware, or some complicated setup.
It's a ♥♥♥♥ing xbox one controller and it just uses bluetooth.
Valve needs to get their ♥♥♥♥ together.

(On a lighter note, I got a steam controller at the same time and it's pretty awesome, unique and innovative. It's weird that the steamlink is so poorly cobbled together in comparison)

To be fair it's a pretty new controller, the old ones didn't have bluetooth.
Just because they can connect to it doesn't mean that it just works.'

EDIT: looks like the beta supports that controller. Did you run the beta? http://steamcommunity.com/app/353380/discussions/

I have an xbox one s controller and it works just fine on my steam link via bluetooth. I'm going to assume you just never updated your controller's firmware and that is why you are having problems.

I literally said it in the comment you idiot.
downloaded xbox accessories off the windows marketplace, plugged in controller, updated firmware, tried syncing with steam link again. STILL NOPE.

I've tried using the beta and public builds for steam link, tried checking for updates.

EVERYTHING IS UPDATED

Hope it stays broken for you. Call me what you will but I'll take solace knowing mine works and yours doesn't.

"controller firmware 3.1.1221.0
No update available"

steamlink public version 518. apparently beta version 518 too. "No updates available"

So really, tell me what update I can do here that magically fixes everything.

Same error every time.

"bluetooth communication failed. Connection timed out"

and I called you idiot because you didn't properly read my problem, gave a smug response that suggested I do something I'd said I'd done. Then just said yours is working so meh.
Useless comment why did you even leave it?

I missed the one sentence reading your long ass rant that said you updated it, sue me.

ah! So apparently the current built is 566, but mine won't update to it for some reason, saying no updates are available...
Is this a region thing? Anyone else stuck at version 518 from the UK?

"EVERYTHING IS UPDATED"... yet didn't bother to check the build numbers. Who's the idiot now?

I knew it was either the steam link or the controller that was outdated. Maybe next time hold your tongue and check things more thoroughly before bashing someone giving you some advise.

So did you try the beta?
elderbury Jan 3, 2017 @ 5:01am
I told you, everything IS updated.
It says that there is no update to be installed. I click the check for updates button and it doesn't find any.
Anybody would expect that to mean that it is up to date.
And seeing as I already told you that I did try updating everything, you're still an idiot for asking if I'd updated it.

If you're going to skim read and post nothing useful, just stop answering and wait for someone who knows how to force a steamlink to update if the software won't do it.

And yes, I tried the beta...

What build are you on?

What a weak excuse, you know damn well that you screwed up and now you're trying to save face. Don't worry though this will be my last post, I spent more time arguing with someone that can't admit they were wrong than I would have liked.

I got it to work!!

So, if anyone's reading this that's had the same problem and has scrolled past all these useless comments, here's how to actually fix it.

Just reset the steamlink back to factory settings.

It will look really odd, with an unfamiliar ugly menu,
but you can select check for updates by hitting Y for settings and then scrolling down.
It will then spend an hour updating, back to the familiar menu you know, and (hopefully) the most recent build.

Must be something about that version number that got stuck, as every time I checked for updates it said it was up to date, and I no reason to not trust it!

Hope this helps, as ever, expect glitches when dealing with the steam link :steamsad:
