I have noticed that the device itself doesn't seem to be the source--prior to connecting to a computer the interface is responsive and the sound effects play normally.
One key difference from the OP is that my link and computer are both connected to the router through ethernet cable, as opposed to the link connecting through wi-fi.
I fixed this issue by disabling all "not used" playback devices (sound) in windows.
There were some unused devices present in the list, that were not disabled.
So just disable those devices (probably all but you loudspeaker/headset) and it should work.
Thanks to mithos as that is what got me to notice it!
show hidden/disabled devices
then disable all not being used
then windows will switch from pc speakers to streaming with less issues
be sure no meida players, games or browsers playing sounds are open before you begin streaming, as thast confuses windows audio manager when changing output devies
