Steam Link

Steam Link

XBOX One Controller (For Windows 10 Edition and Steam Link)
I know there are a couple of threads regarding this. Both old and new, but I still can't wrap my head around this.

I bought a XBONE Controller + Wireless for Windows 10, hoping that it would work quite well with the Steam Link, since I've read those controllers are "supported".

Sure enough, I can plug it into my PC and use it while I've already started the Steam Link with my Steam Controller. But is there anyway to actually sync it with Bluetooth, or plug the USB Bluetooth adaptor into the actual Steam Link and make it work natively?

I've read this could be achieveable with VirtualHere, but before I actually spend more money to get this controller work I would like to know if VirtualHere really solves my problem.

Thanks for your time.

Actually you don't need the USB Bluetooth at all on Steam Link. Just do these steps:
1. Start Steam Link, without starting the streaming.
2. Go to options > Bluetooth. There will be all the BT devices connected if you have any.
3. Press Xbox button on the Xbox Controller to start it. It will flash slowly.
4. Press the Sync button for 2-3 seconds, a small one on the back. The Xbox button will flash faster.
5. Wait a few seconds. It will be appear on the list now.
6. With other device or controller, go to Xbox Controller and select it to Connect. After a moment it will say "connected".
Now you can use it full wireless.

When both controller and steam link are off, you can start Steam Link with the Xbox Controller pressing the Xbox button for 1 second.

There is a small "bug" with the controller. If you shut down the Steam link, the controller will flash searching his xbox. It will not respond at all at this moment. Don't worry, just let it rest and it will shut down itself after 1-2 minutes.
Just note that you won't be able con restart Steam Link with the Xbox controller the first 2 minutes after shutting down steam link. If you need to restart it, you can remove the battery until stop flashing, or just wait.

Hello, thank you for your reply and all.

I've done step 1-5. But it doesn't show. About 7-10 times. But I thank you for your advice and I will try it out again.

There are 3 types of Xbox One controller: first version when XO came out, second with change in headphone plug (similiar to the one in most of smartphones) in and third version sold with Xbox One S.
Only last one have BT, two others requires wireless receiver or usb cable.

Open battery cover and on the sticker inside you will have info about model.
EDIT:
1537 - the oldest one, no 3.5mm jack or BT
1697 - second one, 3.5mm jack but no BT
1708 - newest, have 3.5mm jack and BT.

Andr3v is right. Only the newest model has a compatible bluetooth. If your model has no BT, then there is no way to make it work wireless, only USB.

If your model is the one with BT, then try to update the firmware:
1. On host Windows 10 open Startup and search "Xbox Accesories", download it through Microsoft Store (free, registration not required)
2. Open that software. If ask for registration to Xbox world and all the stuff, you have the option to skip it.
3. Plug the Xbox Controller via USB. It should appear on the software.
4. On the top left corner check if you have an option to upgrade the firmware. If so, do it and follow the steps.
Then try to syncronize again with Steam Link as before.

Thank you both for your reply. It seems I had model 1697. I did read about that earlier though, but at the shop's webpage from where I ordered it it stated in the product information that it did indeed support Bluetooth several times. Seems I need to have a little talk with their customer services for faulty product information.

Thank you all for your help and assistance!

I just picked up a new steam link off a friend and I want to know if I can use multiple xbox one controllers.

I have several of the 'gen 2' models (new headphone jack, but no BT) and wonder if buying an xbox one adapter will make this work. Will it work on Steamlink?

If you mean the Xbox BT adapter for PC, then there is no need to use it on SteamLink.

In any case, any controller should work wired directly to USBs of the SteamLink.

I think he meant the Xbox One adapter, in which case no it won't work. That adapter isn't a bluetooth adapter, it just carries the wireless signal of the first two Xbox One controllers. You have the non-bluetooth models so the only way you can connect to the Link is with USB. That adapter only works for Windows 10.

Setup your controller on your PC. You can start up the steam link and control steam from the room your TV is in.

So I want to just add something here. I have had the Xbox One adapter hooked up to my PC.. a controller connected to my PC.. and ran it through the steam link.. the controller works.

Yeah, but wich one? There are two controllers: 2015 without bluetooth, and 2016 with bluetooth.
The question is about the old Xbox One controllers without BT. Will Steam detect it wirelessly?

well using no matter which of the controllers with the xbox one for windows junk stick, you can get the following results:

PC works in steam Big Picture no matter whether win8.1 or 10 is used (didnt try w7 but from what some ppl write it should be fine too)

using the stick on the link though isnt gonna happen. The link doesnt react to the stick and the controller wont connect to the stick either.

VirtualHere is an often quoted solution for that but if anything that will only transmit the stick to the PC. you are gonna need something else to start the steamlink and connect to the pc.

but honestly the thing that they axed BT for anything other windows than 10 is making me really hate the xbone controller, the DS4 just BTs to anything I want, and most importantly, it didnt need an extra revision to be able to

When I try to pair it to link (my Xbone Wireless controller, the newest version) it doesn't do anything on STEAM link. Just sits there, flashing. SMH. What a crap experience out of the box. Leave it to Valve to deliver a crappy product.
