Road Works

Road Works

How to play this game - a step-by-step introduction
General:
  • Take your time, this is rather a puzzle game than an economy simulation, you can't lose.
  • These are step-by-step instructions, if you do something you aren't told to and get lost, it's your fault. :steammocking:
  • Save regularly, there's no autosave.

Level 1: Callands

Roads:
  • Scroll up until you see the farms (reddish buildings with blue silos).
  • Click the "Build a Road" button (the skewed hexagon on the right side) and select "Dirt" (the only available road type for now). If you built the road in a wrong way you can remove it with the "Remove a Road" button (the 'X').
  • First build a road from the export station (white hall with orange roof) to the right farm, then extend the road to the other farm.
  • Connect the repair service (small building with yellow vehicle on the left) to the road network, so it can repair any road damages that may occur.
  • Connect the mechanic (white building with black chimneys) and the waste dump (grey piles and green conatiners) to the road network.
  • There should appear a red icon (crosshair, hourglass or heap) above each building except maybe the mechanic, which should start to send out grey vehicles to maintain the other buildings. If neither happens several seconds after building a road to that building, something must be wrong with the connection. Sometimes a building looks like it's connected to a road but in fact isn't. In this case try to extend the road a bit.

Routes:
  • Click on a farm, all other buildings will turn black and a small window with two boxes and a few buttons will appear on the top left.
  • Click "Set Target", all valid targets are now marked green, in this case the export station and the waste dump.
  • Right-click at both, the export station and the waste dump. They should appear in the right box of the window. The export station is listed three times since the farm can produce three different goods, but that doesn't matter, yet.
  • Click on the other farm and repeat the last step, then right-click somewhere on the screen (but NOT on any other building than the selected one, you might accidentally add it to or remove it from the list) to close the window and bring back color to the world.

Workers:
  • First have a look at the lower left box. The only relevant information for the early levels of the game is the number next to the blue person, it should read "54/54" or something similar. This means you have 54 workers available and all of them are busy. The problem is that your buildings actually require 85 workers (export station 25, farms and waste dump 20 each), at least they are set to do so.
  • One of your buildings, probably the waste dump, should start to show a man icon sooner or later, indicating a lack of workers. Click it twice to bring up its information window.
  • Here you can see that the waste dump consumes waste and how much of it is currently in the interim storage. A yellow number generally indicates a full or nearly full storage. If the interim storage is full no more waste is accepted. To empty it again the waste dump needs workers, click "Settings" to check that.
  • Check the number under "Employees", it should be 0/20 (everything else in this window doesn't matter, yet).
  • Right-click 2-3 times, then repeat the last two steps to check the employees of the export station. 25 workers are far too many in this level, so reduce it to 10 by moving the slider next to the numbers.
  • Check the waste dump again, it should now have 4/20 employees, which is just enough to precess the waste of your two farms.

Test:
  • Click the simulator button on the right (the '$').
  • Click "Start" to run the simulation, which will measure your average income.
  • In my playthrough it was 190$, with 220$ being the target income. If your income is lower, you can probably optimize your road network. Each section of dirt road costs 0.5$ upkeep, other road types will cost even more. The total road upkeep is displayed at the top left, right next to the main menu button.
  • Right-click to close the window.

Optimization:
  • Click on the export station twice. You'll notice that it receives more food from the farms than it can process. You could redistribute 1-2 workers from one of the farms to the export station, but let's learn something new instead.
  • Click "Settings", and check "Maintenance Trust.", it should be at 80%. This means that when the trustability, which is shown below, reaches 80% the mechanic will send out one of its grey vehicles to repair this building back to 100%. The lower a building's trustability is, the lower is its productivity.
  • Increase "Maintenance Trust." to 100%. Be careful when doing this in later levels, since the mechanic might neglect other buildings then. However, in this level the mechanic hasn't much to do anyway.
  • Rerun the simulation, you should now have enough income to solve this level, if not try to increase the "Maintenance Trust." of your farms. Once your income is sufficient a window will appear and ask you whether you want to go back to the main menu or to continue playing. Click "Continue" and save the level in case you want to check back later.
  • Try to beat 255$/s, or go back to the main menu.
