There's the hub world, which is four areas (each area corresponds to each movie) that you initially travel through in story mode (you only have the characters you are supplied with at that point), and which gives you initial access to the actual levels in story mode (so you're walking through the environments of Jurassic Park or whatever to reach the points to first play the levels). The hubs contain many collectibles, such as:
  • Gold bricks
  • Red bricks (can unlock abilities like stud multiplication, brick detection and faster interaction with switches)
  • Sick Dinos you can collect objects to heal (first seen in the second level of JP)
  • Photo opportunities (you need a character with a camera, like Sarah Harding from TLW or Gray from JW)
Once you've completed that movie, you can travel around the corresponding area in free play mode, helpful for achieving objectives you couldn't do before.

Once you've completed the first level, you'll arrive at the Isla Nublar Jurassic Park hub at the helipad, where you have the option of continuing the Jurassic Park levels or taking the monorail to start the Jurassic World levels. The Lost World hub and levels become available once the JP levels are complete, and JP3 becomes available when TLW levels are completed.

The levels themselves are standard, where once you've completed the story mode (given specific characters to play the level through), you can replay in free play mode (any character you've unlocked and/or purchased and you can choose any of these to play as at any time in the level). You've got several objectives, namely
  • True Survivor (collecting a specific number of studs),
  • collecting 10 minikits (which form a dino skeleton that when complete, you can play as) and
  • obtaining an amber brick (unlocks a dino you can play as, same type as the skeleton in the minikits)
You also unlock a number of characters and a couple of vehicles.

In the hubs, you can spawn a vehicle you've unlocked to ride around in, or use a hexagonal blue pad to spawn a dinosaur you've unlocked, depending on the size of the pad and location.

You say you can't go to Jurassic World until you've completed Jurassic Park, but my experience was different. When the game is firsts tarted, after playing the Prologue for Jurassic Park, it drops you into the hub and you can choose to go straight into Jurassic World. There's a greeter there yelling at you to come join him in Jurassic World, and you can get right on the monorail to start level 1. TLW and JP3; however, cannot be skipped to and must be completed in order.

Once you start the game, it launched into the first level of the first film (first of five levels), and you enter the hub (ie the Jurassic Park park) once this level finishes. You first enter this hub at the helipad, which is right next to the monorail that you can take to the Jurassic World levels at any point you want.

So once you've completed Jurassic Park level one (Prologue), you could
a) Continue the Jurassic Park levels or
b) Take the monorail to Jurassic World

Where did I say that you have to play the levels in movie order?
