When and Where can you buy characters on the first Island?

Have done the first 2 or 3 missions and can not seem to find where you can buy characters. Do you have to complete a certain mission before this unlocks? Or is there a station like in Marvel Heroes where you can change characters?

I found a station to summon vehicles but it did not give an option for changing characters.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

to unlock characters u need to complete the first story then the others the more you do the more characters u can buy the characters will be in random places around the islands

Oh so they are in random places on the map. Like Lego Batman 2 I guess. Was hoping it would be simpler like Marvel Heroes was, but oh well.

Well, the other option is to buy them from the switching menu. Once you're able to do a free play, if you hold Y, you'll get the huge character grid. Once there, you can buy characters you have unlocked, but not yet owned.
