I sunk hundreds into the IOS version.

Love your game btw, will definitely pick it up on steam eventually.
I guess it has 30 hours of content, but one can come across some of those contents more than once eg during raids etc.
Anyway, the biggest problem with having an endless mode is the fact the game was not designed to be endless. All sorts of odd things can start to occur, as the game was not made so that you can still be playing 1000+ years later.
Although to me the biggest problem would be how the game could not simulate later events, like the rise of the Lunar Empire and its conquest of Sartar.
