Some example tracks that represent some less-known, more niche music genres and styles.
(Warning: this post has some links to noise music and other kinds of music that are to most people something that may be really far from their comfort zones, when it comes to music. Please be advised to turn your volume as low as you can before starting to play those songs[especially when listening to the noise tracks!!! They can go really loud!] because due to very loud and extreme nature of some of them, the initial shock may be a big one and getting exposed to them little by little starting with low volume might be easier. :333 Having expressed this warning, feel free to enjoy the music and i hope maybe somebody might find new music that they like when they see this post and read it. ^^)

So, a long time ago when i had come across Drive Any Track and had been wondering how it would react to some "weirder" and experimental types of music, the developers asked me to throw some example songs to them for testing their system. I was going to do it and give some examples but, mostly out of laziness and due to my memory being really bad, i forgot the whole thing. I'll do my "duty" now. :)

I think i will start with the most horrible genre to start it with, and give some examples of noise music, which is a music genre which i love a lot but i know most people will probably never get used to. Usually when i introduce people to noise, i link a couple of albums made by my friend, the person via whom i found this type of music in the first place. And i'm not going to make an exception to that now either. So, here's a couple of albums from "glasscarpenter":

https://archive.org/details/siro386Glasscarpenter-Aeaenitae

https://archive.org/details/siro501Glasscarpenter-EquivocalDistortedTape

Noise is actually a pretty wide genre of music, or should i say, "anti-music"(as that's something noise has often been meant to be, too). Sometimes the music is more ambientic, sometimes it's closer to (Digital )Hardcore, sometimes it's something between them(what i mean with this is that the more ambientic type of noise music tends to be less harsh on ears and the other side of it's spectrum is naturally very... harsh.). Aeaenitae is a more ambientic album but it still includes tracks that are pretty harsh and something that i first thing about when thinking about noise music. Equivocal Distorted Tape is leaning more into Noisecore(Noise + Hardcore) and more harsh noise.

http://archive.org/details/siro433Glasscarpenter-Forestoverdoze

Forest Overdoze is a simple little EP with some experimental songs, starting with one of my favourite noise tracks. :D

If Glitch music uses glitches and malfunctions as stylistic elements, Noise is completely based on all that noisy audio material which most people hate when they get exposed to it. It's a very extreme type of music, but for some reason it has got its own fanbase and market. The most extreme subgenre of noise is definitely Harsh Noise Wall(second harshest would naturally be Harsh Noise), or HNW, which is literally something like if somebody was trying to stuff an audio version of a brick wall inside your head using your ears, just to give a little metaphora here... XD I'll choose this as an example of HNW:

https://archive.org/details/siro749Shikabala-CalorDoDeserto

If you want to check a very famous artist who has made lots of Harsh Noise, there are lots of songs from "Merzbow" on Youtube! :D He's a Japanese noise musician(sometimes Japanese noise music is called Japanoise) and a really important and big name in the noise scene. For some reason noise music actually seems to be somewhat popular in Japan, or maybe i have understood it wrong. I'm still trying to understand why even i like this kind of music, but i'm totally okay with it. :3

This post became too long to post in just one part so i will post the rest after this reply/comment/message/post. :)

Okay, enough ear-r*pe(for now... ;) ). XD I should move on to other kinds of musical weirdness. :D I think i'll introduce Speedcore and Extratone next. :3 Speedcore is, as you can guess from its name, music with a really high tempo. Usually Speedcore's definition is that the songs' tempo is at least 250 BPM. Basically, the kicks in a tempo like that tend to sound like as if somebody was shooting a machine gun(in fact, sometimes producers have made reference to machine guns in their speedcore songs. ;) ). One of my favourite speedcore artists is Imil. Here's one great example of speedcore, with a really nice melody too:

That song can be found from this album:

https://archive.org/details/DCRPS028

It's not possible to stream this album from that page, only download, but it should be possible to find the tracklist for "A Speedcore State Of Mind" on Discogs and find the songs on Youtube. :D It's my favourite speedcore album. ^^

Komprex is probably the best known speedcore artist that there is:

That was the very first individual speedcore song that i ever heard, many years ago when i was trying to find as fast songs as possible. X) And now, time for some Extratone. Changing the topic from Speedcore to Extratone is one of the most natural things, when you think about it. :D Extratone is a subgenre of Speedcore and it should always be at least 1000 BPM. In this tempo you can't hear individual samples anymore and instead the samples have become more like a tone(as the name hints). So when in Speedcore the kicks sound like machine gun, in Extratone they may sound more like "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep". :P Extratone is quite extreme style of music too... but then again, genres like Hardcore, Extratone, Speedcore, Terrorcore and Splittercore(hmm... i think Splittercore was a sort of less official name for music with a tempo of 500 BPM :P) are sometimes jokingly referred to as "EDM", or Extreme Dance Music. ;)

Many thanks for the examples! Looking forward to trying these in the game and seeing what happens!!

This is the first Extratone song i ever heard, Diabarha - Uranoid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RAYlykjQrw

Diabarha has made a lot of awesome Extratone songs, and that is a quite old one. :P One of my favourite songs under this genre is a song from his newest album which kind of has a theme regarding mental disorders. That song's name is "Autism". It's really really loud and extreme in my opinion so i'll skip linking it here. :3 And anyways, you can find it from Diabarha's Youtube channel by yourself, if you are interested in listening to it. :D But again i recommend putting the volume down. The extratone parts don't start rightaway in it though.

Oh, and if you like broken beats(i saw that PC Gamer had tried some Squarepusher and Venetian Snares tracks to "break" the game), Breakcore is a perfect genre(it's a more destructed version of Drum'n'bass and all those breakbeats. :D I mean, very broken...). This is my personal favourite of breakcore songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip6Oyiz9qbQ

I like Reizoko Cj's style a lot. He makes his breakcore tracks sound really "random" and broken, which i like a lot.

Hmm... i guess that should be enough for now. :D Maybe there may be other weird and experimental genres too(well, there's Flashcore, which is, if i remember right, an experimental avant-garde genre combining song structures familiar from Breakcore and IDM["Intelligent Dance Music"] but utilizing extratone-ish sounds and other atmospheric sounds instead of normal drumbeats as instruments. :D) but i probably can't remember them now. XD

But yeah, hopefully you will find some test materials here and maybe somebody even finds new music to listen to. ^^ I personally haven't got any technical boundaries in my music taste so i literally like everything that i hear(the low quality of noise and the extremely high tempoes of speedcore and extratone have made sure that there are no more limits for me to break to make my taste in music any wider XD). I'm always open to hear new music and i have also got a big external HDD with lots of space to fill with new music, and i have also developed an addiction towards downloading legally free music from netlabels and other places so, yeah. If somebody want's to suggest me some music to listen to, feel free to send me a message somewhere. XD

Hmm... i'll add a couple of tracks from me here to finish this post. :3 Here's some noise:

https://soundcloud.com/janmeeba/christmas-presents-dark

Actually, i still have kind of hard time trying to think of it as noise music because, to be fair, it is actually a photo turned into audio using Audacity. All i did was apply an equaliser effect on it and export it. XD This is related to one of my hobbies, "databending", which means editing a file in an environment where it is not meant to be edited in. For example a photo in an audio editor(like in this case) or in a text editor. Basically i like to corrupt and break files in a creative way to make glitch art. :) But let's not go to that topic, as i'm supposed to give examples of music genres. I have got some private noise tracks(much better than this one) on Soundcloud but i'm not going to link them because they will go to a noise-split in the future and i haven't finished my part in that split album yet.
Janmeeba Jun 2, 2015 @ 3:32pm
This song is not noise, but something much more easy to listen to(maybe):

https://soundcloud.com/janmeeba/just-me-walking-to-my-bus-stop

It's a 10-minute-long extract from a 57-minute-long Field Recording. Field Recordings is also something that i personally regard as a "music genre" but i guess it doesn't really even fit as an anti-music genre, at least not if it's just a pure recording. Like this one. But yeah, in that track you can just hear me walking to my bus stop from my home. XD I like making Field Recordings a lot. Yet another addiction. I have made over one hundred recordings now. WHOOPS! X)

That's all. No more parts left to post. :P Sorry for making it this big. XD I have got Asperger's and i'm prone to rambling really random stuff when talking about things i'm _really_ interested in. :D And then i will feel embarrassed posting masses of walls of text everywhere. Sorry for that. XD I just can't help it. :')

That's great! Some real crazy audio here!
Doctor Fudge Jun 2, 2015 @ 3:43pm
Since I'm walking in on this, may I suggest that you add something for folk/traditional songs? Possibly an earthy and pastel colored map, classify it under the header "traditional" or "world" music as some radio stations and other such places tend to do?
Janmeeba Nov 23, 2016 @ 10:12am
Hmm... the thought just crossed my mind so i thought i might just drop by and ask: Have my suggestions been of help in testing/tuning the algorithms of the game? :D How did it go? X)

I hope someday i will be able to play this game... but i need to get some more powerful and up-to-date hardware in my possession first. :P
