Yes it does kinda work. We got it working with Hamachi. Install Hamachi and join the same network. Copy the Hamachi IP (IPv4) of the person who hosts and creates the game. When you join, paste the IP into the window. Enter and wait for a few seconds. It will say "no game available" for a short while, just ignore that. Within 10 seconds the game of your friend should show up.

in case you need more ports to play error free, check with this which these are
(btw might join game lobby in background for some reason)
