also, i am sure Japan isn't the only media industry guilty of this... but since i'm just a huge weab and a linguistics nerd (oh god WHAT DID I DO in a previous life to deserve this
oh by the way, for the all none of you who care: the correct usage of a semicolon is when both the part of the phrase prior to the semicolon and the part following it could stand alone as separate phrases and still make sense. if you ever want to avoid using words like "AND" or "BUT" you can often replace them with a semicolon; context pending as your mileage may vary...
