Microsoft .NET Framework Error SOLVED!
okay so earlier this afternoon i asked the forums how to fix the same error alot of people seem to be having with the .NET framework

after some searching and trial and error i have found an easy solution that worked for me.

go to control panel and start by uninstalling Nvidia PhysX from your programs.
once it is uninstalled go back to steam and re-install Batman AA (not sure if this step is neccesary, but i took it)
once the game is ready to play in steam again click play and wait for steam to reinstall PhysX

it should work without error after that, did for me anyways.

The solution Ants in my Eyes Johnson gave worked for me. I did not have to uninstall the game though. Just had to uninstall Nvidia PhysX

Hi everyone! Sorry to necro an old thread but I recently had to troubleshoot this issue and none of the methods documented in this thread worked for me, so I thought I'd document what I did.

This issue was basically as described in the OP. Trying to run the game would result in a prompt to install Microsoft .NET 3.5, but the installer would always crash and the game wouldn't start. Downloading the .NET installer from the web, enabling .NET 3.5 in the programs & features menu, nothing worked. What eventually worked for me was to install .NET 3.5 manually from a reference Windows 10 ISO using the command-line utility dism.

In order to do what I did you'll need the following:
  • A Windows 10 install ISO (or some other media, such as USB or DVD)
  • Administrative privileges on the user account in question

These are the steps I followed that resolved the issue:
  1. Mount the Windows 10 install media to a drive. If all you have is an ISO, you can do this by simply double-clicking the ISO. Pay attention to the drive letter that the install media is mounted on, you'll need it later.
  2. Open an administrative command prompt. To do this, left-click the start menu icon, type in "cmd", then right click the "Command Prompt" icon and left-click "Run as administrator."
  3. In the new command prompt, type the following command: dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:\sources\install.wim. Note that the source path is in bold-face. Your source path might be different if your Windows 10 install media was mounted to a different drive letter. So it might be E:\sources\install.wim or F:\sources\install.wim. Substitute in the path that's valid on your system.
  4. The command described above should finish successfully.
  5. Next, we're going to install .NET 3.5 from the command line using dism. This step is similar to the previous one. Type in the following command: dism /Online /Enable-Feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:D:\sources\sxs. Again, note the bolded source path. Replace D:\ with whatever drive letter is hosting your Windows 10 install media.
  6. The command described above should also complete successfully.

At this point, you should be able to run the game without the .NET installer popping up and getting in the way, but in my case I ran into an issue where the game crashed with a different error message stating that the proper version of DirectX wasn't installed. I fixed this issue by installing the DirectX redistributable in the game's install directory. Previously this hadn't worked because the DX setup exe depended on .NET 3.5, but with .NET installed properly, DirectX installed properly and the game began to work.

Hope this helps someone! Arkham City is a badass game and it's a shame to see so many people struggling to get it working.

Reinstalling just the DirectX ( June 2010, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 as found in other thread ) helped me. Fortunately I hadn't to reinstall my graphics driver (NVidia GTX-970, driver 385.41).

I downloaded it, but don't know which file(s) to extract.

holy thread necromancy batman. Let old threads die. Make a new thread if you need help with something that there's no current threads about.

You need the dx9.0c legacy installer and the physx system software which is included with NVIDIA drivers, or installed seperately from the included installer or downloaded from nvidia.com

If you're trying to play in Big Picture, run it from normal Steam first so the setup is performed. Wow, Valve, really?

thank you!
Thank you! it worked like a charm.

yeah, but sometimes you have to install a old version of physx that is located on the game's folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY\redist
AND i had to search for a missing dll on internet

This did not work for me (Windows 10 Pro). But simply installing a newer version of DirectX from the web worked like a charm. [http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35]

worked!! thanks buddy!!!
Thank you. It worked perfectly.
So I downloaded the demo to see if it works on my computer and I got this error, when I tried to install PhysX it says a newer version is present and did not install, what can I do?

Old edit: So I found a way to fix it not mentioned before, go to this page:
http://syntheticx.com/archive/2009/08/batman-arkham-asylum-demo

and save the three files in the folder he mentions and voila! (not that the input file needs to be added manually because for some reason it saves it as input (1))

Now to see if this game is good and if I should buy the full version muhahahha

**EDIT**: It worked but now there are graphics issues, it has portrubing things that don't look like anything and I am out of ideas. : p

***FINAL EDIT***: go to nvidia control panel and switch physx to run on cpu, solved! (disable physx like is explained here): https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2700/~/disabling-nvidia-physx-gpu-acceleration
