Big maps that you can wander around but you are forced to go forward in the story
its an action adventure game.
You can check many many many yutubes on this game and reviews
If I were to make a rough comparison, I think Legend of Zelda:OoT would be the closest thing that comes to mind right now, only on a smaller scale.
Basically, you have a hub-like setup. The asylum grounds is the hub and the various buildings you enter are the offshoot areas. The buildings' accessibility depends largely on what stage of the main quest you are at.
There really aren't any side quests aside from collecting riddles, and the thugs for the most part don't magically respawn except for various stages of the main quest.
Near the end you will have the freedom to pretty much go back to any of the buildings, but the only reason to do so is to collect missing riddles.
This isn't a "do whatever you like" sandbox game. Batman:Arkham City is a bit closer to what you want. Thugs respawn and there are limited sidequests, but still not exactly "do whatever you like" sandbox.
The strength of this game lies primarily with the story and environment.
