Graphics Glitches w PhysX enabled
Hey guys,

wanted to replay this Masterpiece with better graphics (already played it on Xbox 360) and i get strange graphical issues when PhysX is enabled. Like meshes that go haywire in Oblivion games.

See: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=494790777
and: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=494790621
Those are right at the start when you have to rescue the guards out of the poison gas. To be exact: The place that blows up after you got the first guard up and jumped over to the second platform.
The worst so far was the fight versus the very first big/mutant guy. With PhysX enabled the guys meshes were so stretched and scattered that i couldn't see anything else. Sadly i have no screenshot of this and after a reload it was playable again, but you get the idea.

The problems exist when PhysX is on normal or high(doesn't matter here) and in the Nvidia Control panel the processing unit for PhysX is the graphics card.
When i let the CPU do this i got miserable framerates, but no graphics glitches.
I got the warning in the launcher that my card isn't supported because bla GTX 260+, but thats because they seemed to have forgotting what 260+ means.(i've seen that on other threads even with 460+ cards)

All other PhysX games work like a charm, only AA has those issues so far (haven't tested City yet)

Specs:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU: AMD FX-8350 22 °C
RAM: 16,0GB Corsair Vengance
Graphics: GeForce GTX 980 (Gainward Phantom) 30 °C
Res: 1920x1080 / 60 Hz

Drivers are all up to date, Windows is fully updated.
Reinstalled the newest Nvidia driver.
The system isn't getting hot (CPU 38° max, GPU 60° max)
No Bluescreen, no other issues of any kind.
The only modification i made to the game is to delete the freaking unskippable intro movies.
I verified the game cache already and there are no issues there (except for the intro movies, but i doubt that a few *.bik movies cause graphics issues)

So, i have no idea whats left to try. I doubt that the old original PhysX driver that came with AA will work with the new card.
I can play it without PhysX, but thats one benefit why to replay it on the PC. :/

Any ideas for a fix or anything to try?

Okay i solved it after a bit of searching.

In case anyone else will have this problems:
The cause was the new install from steam, more precisely the friggin first time setup.
On start the first time setup installed an old version of PhysX.
Apparently it will not check if any new version is installed and will register in the "Programs and Features"(Win8.1) or Programs and Functions (Win7) simply as "Nvidia PhysX".
The PhysX Driver installed by the Nvidia Driver or the Geforce Experience is registered as "Nvidia PhysX System Software".
So i had 2 Versions at the same time and AA used the old one or both.
After i uninstalled the "Nvidia PhysX" and did for saftey again a reinstall of the whole new Nvidia Driver and ran the Checkpoint 20 times to be sure.
And the Bug is gone.

So if you're having issues, check for this.

The bug wouldn't have happened at all if the first time setup wasn't so dump or would be globally controlled by the steam client, not by any game separately. Would save a bit of space, too.

Same problem with me. For me physx effects did NOT show. The pictures above happened to me too, i already reinstall latest NVidia driver and all redist packages on games directory and latest Windows 10 updates installed, but the problems persist.

All others games with physx works like charms.. help?

I don't have experience with Win10 yet, maybe it's a problem there.
Was the problem there before you upgraded to 10?
Have you searched your programs dialog for the double PhysX installation?
All the redist packages? if so, uninstall them manually and skip the PhysX software there, and to be sure, reboot after the uninstall and delete the temp files.
Maybe that'll help.

Thanks Schattenwolf, more than 3 times uninstall and install again all redist packages, and redownload BAA from steam 2 times. Uninstall Physx from BAA Redist Bundle, install latest NVidia Driver, and try following your instruction above. Physx did not work, all other features works.

All Physx and other features work very well before upgraded to Win10. Maybe BAA not compatible with Win10. And now i played this games without Physx, looks like something missing without it.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully this will be fixed when a new driver is released by Nvidia :/
Yeah i know what you mean. Played it on the Xbox previously and its a complete different feeling on PC with everything maxed out.

Physx can actually cause a crash when you try to exit the morgue after the first scarecrow bit. Better to just leave it off.

I finished the first scarecow scene and had no issues. But i heard that the 2nd has a massive memory leak.
We'll see.

just got aa goty & im having graphic errors, that are definitely being caused by the physx being turned on in the games' settings in launcher, because if i set it to off, the game appears "normal".

please sir allow me to ask, when you mention reinstalling the latest nvidia graphics driver, did you first remove it from control panel - remove programs, or did you simply run the installation again, from geforce experieince, & just overwrote what was there?

ive never tried to this this, & i dont want to mess it up. thank you.

Hey, and sorry to hear, that you have problems.
I had to reread my own thread, it's quite a while since i played Batman.

The Problem was 2 Versions of PhysX installed.

So the way would be to uninstall this specific PhysX via Windows. To reinstall the Nvidia driver, you do not need to uninstall it separately. When you run the setup, you can just tick the checkbox "Complete reinstall" or something like that.
That should solve your problems.

I can't say if it fixed problems with Windows 10, as i haven't played Batman since i upgraded.

thanks for replying & i understand the cause of the issue, i deleted the phys x driver program that arkham asylum goty installed, through control panel remove programs.

when i originally installed the latest nvidia driver (version 372.90) i did so with express installation, through the geforce experience program's driver update functionality.

maybe im misunderstanding you but my question is, can i just run the geforce experience again to reinstall & thus overwrite the driver files, or do i have to first uninstall in control panel, remove programs, & then run the geforce experience express installation again.?

i also have a separate physx driver "physx system software 9.16..0318" that was installed back in august, i should NOT mess with that @ at all, correct?

just a little confused & as i mentioned, i dont want to harm my drivers, just get them to play nice so i can run arkham asylum goty with the physx settings on normal, or high, not off like they currently have to be, or i get strange graphical streaking.

thanks.

The driver is not the problem. The first time setup of steam is. just unsinstall every physX realted stuff from your pc and reinstall the driver. If you want with the express install.
Ipersonally remove the 3D Vision stuff every time because it wont need it ever.
And that fixed it back on Windows 8.1 for me.
As i said, i never tested it on Windows 10.

Thanks for this helpful post. To anyone reading this now, Nvidia released a legacy Physx version which you must install separately. It works great now!
