[Combat challenge] How to correctly use slow-mo ?

My longest combo string is x60 in sewer bat extreme. I've failed to repeat this ever since.
I avoid combat take down to farm for a higher combo string with final ground pounding. But the combo is broken when batman decided to enter slow-mo mid combat before or after critical strike.

For examples. there are two thugs. one is nearby and the other is slightly far away. I want to hit the later. Sometimes batman will immediately leap toward him. Other time he will do a slow-mo kick and got hit by the near-by one. Or a knife/stun/pipe thug can hit me during slow-mo as well.

How can I know exactly when the slow-mo will happen to redirect my attack ?

Not sure if you are trying to just complete the combat challenge or gain a really high combo. The slow-mo will happen whenever you get a critical strike (which is doing another basic attack at the same time batman makes contact with an enemy) You cannot switch to a different enemy when the slow mo has already started.

To avoid getting hit during a critical strike you can try to evade over a nearby enemy as soon as you see batman lunge towards someone in slow-mo. Or you can try to be a bit slower/faster with the timing of your moves to stop the critical strike from happening.

Yes I am trying to gain a high combo. Under normal circumstance it would not be such a nuisance but there was like > 20 of them in the final stage of the challenge. The slow mo should be applied to both the one instigate the attack and batman next target.
In any case, I just leap over then attack instead immediate counter as you suggested.
