Generally, you need to try and get batsmen in a bit before going to 7 and 8 aggression. In 20 over matches, you really need to have as many aggressive and very aggressive players in your side as you can.
I play ball-by-ball in one day formats so that I can adapt to the situation. If a batsman scores a boundary off the first ball, playing ball-by-ball I can then lower his aggression to reduce the wicket chance. Clicking Play over I can't do that. Whilst it sounds a lot slower, I don't find it too bad.
When bowling I will use custom fields and sometimes bowl outside off too. I also try to really go for early wickets and will generally pick a wicket taking bowler over a more economical bowler who doesn't get as many wickets.
I use 3 or lower if I really need to stop run scoring
It is one thing to give a slight edge for those who create a custom field, it is another to make them essential.
I've found 2012 and 2014 on iOS to both be really frustrating experiences.
Let's start by team composition. You need to pick up the team keeping where you are playing and against the opposition. E.g When you play in Australia, South Africa you need to have batsmen who play good against pace, specifically the first 10 overs (new ball). Similarly, you need to have a good bowling attack: not just good average but bowlers that can strike on early. Look at the bowling SR. The same goes for other conditions e.g. in Asian places expect the spinners to create havoc. So pick your team against who you are playing!
As far as finishing is concerned, like losing by 20 runs or so, there are a couple of things that can cause this. Like not having enough specialist bowlers, a chasing batsman might stick around because of bad bowling and that may cost you runs when you could have troubled him in early innings. It may occur because of a run margin that you could have easily contained in start of the 2nd innings (e.g. when i score 250+), I am defensive with bowlers until I get few wickets. Also pay attention to batsmen strengths and weaknesses.
