But the butcher should use tú/vosotros.
Also, I'll correct mysef:
early retirement = jubilación anticipada
If you don't want to use "coger" (and I totally get it) "atrapar" sounds way better than "agarrar".
I am really sorry about the tone in the first message but, really, the is really bad.
We understand it, but you also understand Jar Jar Binks and wouldn't like a game written like that.
Upside down exclamation/question marks: Left out to save space. Again, this was discussed.
1. I agree, I went for brevity
2. Pachanga is a well known word
3. Bruto is a well known word
4. I'll take your word for it, no one had a problem with it here though.
5. Eh. It makes sense but I could change it to something else. "Practice drum" is what we call the oil drums we practice shooting at, that's not even a cultural thing, it's just something shooters do lol
7. I used "tacitas" because it's funnier, and it's a shoutout to those Vin Diesel movies. (kill you with my teacup)
10. Respectful tone is something we discussed. The scientist starts off respectful, then the words change to be informal when he realizes the Bug Butcher is a schlub.
14. Artilugios is the funnier sounding word for "gadgets" or "trinkets". (I would love to see your gadgets!; Everyone wants to see my gadgets). Used "sus" because the scientist is still respectful at this point.
•"Machucar" is a common word used in cooking (mashing). Plus it's funny, which was another goal. Also discussed. I hope everyone understands by now this is written for a casual game, not an essay.
"Atrapar" is what we do to wild animals, not stationary/inanimate objects. "Recoger" still has "coger", also why I passed on it. "Agarrar" is "grab", a happy medium.
I lived in germany for two years and I shared a german grammar class with people from Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Perú, Costa Rica...believe me. Sometimes it was difficult for us to understand each other.
I bet you used Mexican Spanish. It's understandable, is the closest to USA. But it's not a worldwide standar (in fact, is famous for being really "bastarized" from american english. They might be closer to you but their spanish is far from being the best) Those "well known" words you are refering to...well...they just simply are not.
Also "machucar"...first time I hear it. I looked it up in google and the first link is to a portuguese wiki. Yes, I guess it means "aplastar" o "espachurrar" but is not a common word.
So...
I bet the last thing you wanted to hear is that this job was done poorly. And I understand that doing this the proper way would take an enormous ammount of time and effort (if not, there wouldn't be people who makes money locating videogames).
I just wanted to warn you of two things:
- There are tons of mistakes. No matter what kind of spanish you are using, there are lots of mispelling and grammar mistakes.
- For the several hundred million of spanish-speaking people that live outside Mexico this game will sound silly at best an, at some points, like total jibberish. It gives bad press to the game. Just so you know.
The fact that you tried to teach me which words are common in my mothertongue didn't help neither. Once again, the spanish you speak in the USA is not famous for its quality standars.
Well, this was just an informative post.
I did what I could. But it's late and I have games to play.
Bye and good luck.
As I stated before, I think the game is pretty good.
Well done.
PS: I got the idea, the scientist is respectful, the butcher isn't. Then why is he speaking like a 19th century dude with some ocational slang?
Do what I did and just send them your fan translation, then get called a monkey by people from a different culture lol.
Really, don't try to translate each word by looking it up in the dictionary.
IT JUST WON'T WORK.
I've apologized several times.
If you are so easily hurted don't work on videogames. We nerds are a bunch of cruel bastards. Didn't you know?
Your translating work is still terrible, though.
If you want to go the "catch" route, "atrapar" would be proper when the coins are in the air, "recoger/pick up" is proper when they're on the floor. It's nitpicky, I get it. I'm not anal about these things. I'm still sending corrections.
And now you're getting aggressive, so let's end the conversation. *shrug*
Totally agree.
Good night.
We either remove the spanish language alltogether now or we make two separate languages. One for Mexican and one for european spanish. Would that make sense?
