At least that appears to be the strategy, though I can't say it's entirel accurate since I've yet to succeed with this attempt.
The main hint to Hitting Gold on Chapter 1 is to make sure your contracts are the 3 day ones. So don't bother with any contracts at Anchorage since they cost you valuable time and when you stop at a port, add more contracts as you finish the old ones, if you got spare tonnage make sure you load it with the second port.
Here is the ideal port setup
Metro Van -> LA -> Manzanillo -> LA
You need to think one step ahead, remember, gun for the 3 day trips and avoid contracts that takes you to a new area.
1. Don't play the tutorial.
2. Sell the given ship and get a small tanker/container ship. You need money - tankers give bonus on profit.
3. Allways captain your ships in and out of port by yourself: saves a lot of money and AI looses 1-2 days by waiting per contract.
4. Sort the offers list by port and only do short distance jobs.
Mission 2 and 3 in Gold is also pretty easy if you are able to addapt your strategies.... (e.g. don't have ships in NA if you have mission goals in Europe...)
I'm Maverick McLeod - fly safe!
Here's how I did it:
Also, for the suggestion about selling the ship for a tanker, I don't think that's possible in Chapter 1.
Selling your ship for the tanker works in Chapter 2
