How to throw a grenade

Am I missing something when throwing a grenade. As soon as click on the G key on my PC the grenade is launched. Is there a way I can hold the grenade and aim it before throwing it. It seems that I waste a lot of grenades because of throwing them to far or too close and I can't find a way to aim them.
