They're independent, you can play in any order.
New Order starts right where Old Blood ends.
Old Blood was released long after New Order, so many people played NO first.

Well, if you want the ENTIRE play order:

Spear of Destiny and its Mission Packs.

Wolf 3D Episodes 4, 5, and 6.

Wolf 3D Episodes 1, 2, and 3.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein (2009).

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus

In terms of what actuallly counts as "canon", it's best to just stick with Wolfenstein 2009 and forward.

If you want to know the REAL canon:

Spear of Destiny happens in which Hitler and the Nazis manage to find the mythical Spear of Destiny THREE times and B.J. stops them from using it all three times (while killing half the Grosse family)

He then infiltrates enemy territory to stop a chemical weapons program (Wolf 3D episodes 4, 5, and 6).

At the end of Episode 6 B.J. is captured and must escape Castle Wolfenstein and kill Hans Grosse, or at least maim him (Ep 1)

He then goes on to kill Dr. Schabb and his mutants (Ep 2)

And finally he assaults Hitler himself in the Fuherbunker and gravely wounds him (Ep 3).\

Then RtCW happens. However, and this is important: only the Deathshead chapters are canon .

Wolfenstein 2009 comes after that and follows the Deathshead chapters of RtCW and involves the Black Sun Universe and that helps explain the crazy powers that the Nazi pigs have in The Old Blood and The New Order.

The Old Blood is a re-telling of Wolf 3D Ep 1 and parts of RtCW. Specifcally, the Helga and SS Paranormal parts of RtCW.

The New Order is...the New Order and it follows Wolf 2009 and the Old Blood directly.

And, as you know, Wolfenstein II The New Colussus comes out in October and continues the same story.

Hopefully that's easy to digest.

Frankly, I wouldn't worry TOO much about canon. If you can find a copy though, play Wolfenstein 2009 -> Old Blood -> New Order.

You can consider Wolfie 2009 basically start of a remake. It sort of fits in order to the newer ones while everything before goes to some strange places. Return to Castle Wolfie is pretty good but part of an older continuity. In someways Old Blood feels like a homage to a few levels from Return to Castle Wolfie, particularly the crypts area wtih zombies. Also I should warn you that the old Blood has a tendency to sour the expereince a bit... I didn't enjoy it as much as I did New Order but wantting to play in order I was sort of feeling exhausted coming out of the Old blood.

Never really played RTCW in the early days or any remakes. First title I played was New Order. It's a pretty good game, just finished Old Blood and whilst it is good it doesn't have the same feel for me. I supposed the WWII setting makes it feel a bit drab but it does improve once things take a turn for the more fantastical.

I don't know what all you other fools are talking about, you can't leave Return to Castle Wolfenstein out of the series! It created a ton of the world building that later games take for granted.

It created the OSA (or at least the one in the series) which is directly shown and referenced in 2009s opening with Jack and the Director.

It created Himmler's famed "Paranormal Division" which all later games use.

It created the idea of the Nazi's having the robotic Ubersoldats and even the idea of them having sci-fi level technology at all. It even created the Kumphunds that New Order used though they were cut from the game.

Lastly and most importantly, it introduced the character of Wilhelm Stresse 'Deathshead' and I don't think I need to remind you how important HE is.

So all you people leaving it out must just all be young whipper snappers who never played it or thought it was too hard (it is very old school in difficulty.)

So the PROPER list of play order is:

1?)Wolfenstein 3D (optional, RTCW acts basically like a remake plus the later games don't take into account the death of Hitler apparently so it can be safely ignored)

1) Return to Castle Wolfenstein
-Ruin Operation Resurrection
-Disrupt Deathshead's Ubersoldat Program

2) Wolfenstein 2009
-Ruin Operation Black Sun
-Deathshead returns for revenge fails, and is perminantly scared in the Zepplin crash

3) Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
-Get the location folder for Deathshead's Compound

4) Wolfenstein: The New Order
-Fail to kill Deathshead
-Coma till 1960, do ♥♥♥♥
-Kill Deathshead

5) Wolfenstein: New Colosus
????

Wait wait wait, are you telling me the Third Reich and Paranormal division did not exist before Return? I mean Hitler was originally behind raising these depts in the older games Also wasn't Return the same stroy as the first half of Old Blood? Two agents go to infiltrate, they get caught and are imprisoned for horrible experiments... sound familiar?. Its funny in The New Order, Deathshead claims that the idea of making uber soldats and colossus did not come to him until that Zepplin Crash.

Also

5) Wolfenstien: New Colossus
- BJ once again wakes up from coma, seriously injured.
- Frau Engele seeks revenge for death of her lover.

Boss in the middle of Old Blood was very much like some bosses in Wolfenstein 3D.
