what does awakening do

for the people who don't get a new moveset and new jutsus/tilts (e.g. unmasked obito), what does awakening actually do? is buffing their attack damage the only thing it does or is there more to it?

The awakening can give new jutsus too, in other cases big awakenings

Some characters get whole new entire move sets, some only get enhanced mash string or jutsu, some just get some buffs on their attacks. Also, awakening chakra dashes have higher priority than regular chakra dashes.

Oh yeah, also most awakenings have D-Pad actions in place of the ninja items.

adds dubble egs atacks to there hits more damage and bit faster
