Denuvo...why?
Welp, there goes my Steam Deck portability. And god forbid I change Proton versions.

I can only hope this is temporary and not permanent (like SEGA).

Because Sony saw their games are doing poorly on PC so they thought they can make them sell even less.

Denuvo = No Buy.

Denuvo is so necessary that Clair Obscur was a failure solely due to its lack of the DRM.

And yes, sarcasm.

Denuvo isn't hurting devs because no one cares about it. These studios are still making bank on PC with all the Denuvo they add. Yall just look like clowns for complaining zzz

Thanks for the clowns, love me some free points from dramatic gamers! I bet y’all hate to see me, a MTF female succeed! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️

You look like a clown defending it. There is plenty of reasons why people dislike it, and devs have been forced to remove it in the past due to outrage/poor sales.

Keep telling yourself that. And while you're at it, check out the drop-off for all their sequels.

1. Activation Limit: you're only allowed to "activate" a Denuvo game a certain amount of times. If you reach that limit, you're locked out of your game for 24 hours. On Linux, changing Proton versions counts as a separate activation. On Windows, an OS update or changing hardware components counts as a different activation.

2. Online checks: Denuvo requires you to "phone home" every now and then. Denuvo games create an offline token whenever it does its required check-in. The expiration date of this token is set in stone, and won't refresh until time's up. Even if you connect online before it expires, it won't refresh. You have no way of knowing the expiration date until it actually expires. So on a *handheld* like a Steam Deck, you can only play offline as long as that offline token is still valid. Swapping microSDs and changing Proton versions will invalidate/break the token, triggering the online check.

3. Performance hits: This is debatable, as a lot of examples of Denuvo causing performance issues have been debunked (caused by other factors). But it's widely believed Denuvo causes performance issues on games.

When first run, a Denuvo protected game authorizes your PC to run the game for 48 hours - if it expires when in-game, it'll fetch another 48 hour 'ticket'. If you run it when the ticket has expired, it won't run until it's got a new ticket from Denuvo's servers. You can never check to see when it expires, and you cannot manually renew it.
Effectively, this means Denuvo is a <48 hour time-bomb that will kick you out of your game (losing all progress) if you're offline when the ticket expires. If your net goes down? Kicked out of your game without warning. Attempt to go roaming with a laptop, or Steam Deck? This random, <48 hour time-bomb activates the second you go offline.
If incorrectly implemented, Denuvo can also cause stability and performance issues, although these are mercifully rare.

Correction: the offline token can last more than 48 hours. It can actually be "indefinite" (as long as you don't trigger Denuvo activation limit bs). How long the offline token lasts varies and is up to the individual developers. For example, SEGA Denuvo tokens usually last about 2 weeks.
